THEMED ditl - Perfection :)

Jul 15, 2007 23:52

Its been a while since I did a ditl. Indeed, I wasn't really gonna do one. But then i saw that the theme was "perfection". and I happened to be going to a dog show. And if that's not the epitome of perfection-obsession, I don't know what is ( Read more... )

one of our best dogs was Clyde, a wheaten terrier.

haha, i knew that the wheaten comment would get me in trouble.

I mean I'm sure they are nice dogs to own, but they are not nice dogs to *deal with* when they're someone else's. If you have one that's good for grooming and was not ready to bite at any trifle, you're lucky. Its rare. They are, as an unwritten rule, a very difficult breed and a lot of people get into they because they are cute puppies and are on Beneful packaging. Although some of them are naturally good, most need very careful handling and extensive training, and most people that get into the breed for the wrong reasons are not able to provide that. thus wheatens have a rep among the dog service industry (I work as a groomer). I once ever read on a pamphlet to a Grooming Seminar on the Wheaten, that they are a breed that "groomers dread". Alas for the most part its true.

Well we got ours as a rescue. He was beaten so bad he had to have back surgery which led to huge spasms. He was the most loving dog you could ever imagine but anytime he got excited he would spasm and if you weren't there to hold him down he looked like a bucking bronco. Sad really. They got worse and stronger as he got older then he ended up having seizures. We ended up having to put him down because we couldn't get him to come out of a seizure. We had him at least 11 or 12 years. :(

He was a good dog ;) Thanks for reminding me of all those good memories of him.

ahhh its different when you have a rescue. In that case you the owner are doing the right thing (and not buying a puppy just cause you've seen it on dog food bags). And if the dog does misbehave, at least its excusable.

I'm sorry that you had to go through all that with him. its very unfortunate that he had to be in that abusive situation. A lot of times rescues turn out incredibly loving because they're so grateful.

I like Italian Greyhounds when all I have to do is look at them, but as soon as I have to do anything to them I get the "Omg, I'm gonna break it!" fear. Which is totally not unfounded because they're so fragile. And I always wondered how they would be to try and snuggle with because they're so bony. He's super cute though :)

they are not that fragile.

...okay some individuals with questionable breeding have a genetic disposition for lesser bone density and break legs easily.

But for the most part, they're tough. Perry comes to the grooming shop all the time with me and plays with big dogs. He challenged a big dopey pit mix, he gets slammed by a pair of standard poodles, he's been mouthed by a humongous giant schnauzer... other dogs don't think he's fragile and neither does he, for the most part.

And they're not bony at all. Unless they're going through an adolescent not-eating stage. Which my guy actually is (hey, i was practically celebrating when i got him to eat twice in one day), and he's still one hell of a snuggler :P
