I'm doing a course that teaches how to get kids outside and yet still learning what the curriculum wants. Lots of more imaginitive stuff than just lecturing and copying notes. Good course.
They have a reading this week on Maori Spiritual Perspective in relation to the enviroment and enviromental education. Because it's where that sort of stuff comes in to teaching, the 'take care of the forest' stuff.
I read the following paragraph:
"Some people assume that European missionaries brought the gospel, christian teachings and understandings, to the Maori people of New Zealand. Maori people who have retained their own ancient teachings have always believed in AIO Matua (God/Goddess, the Divine Parents) and Rehua (Christ). The two symbols that one hears in regard to Jesus Christ are the cross and the fish. When one looks at the night sky in the southern hemisphere the 'cross' stands out ever so clearly. Those of us who live in the North Island of New Zealand are constantly reminded about the fish. The Maori name of the North Island is Te Ika A Maui - The fish of Maui."
and promptly lost all interest.
[edited to add]
"The Maori Culture recognises and responds accordingly [to the concept that people are part of the outdoors]. To not recognise and respond to the above fact clearly indicates two points:
1. A lack of knowledge, or.
2. Ignorance."

Closely followed in the text by:
"Outdoor Education programmes which do not recognise and respond to local tribal customs demonstrate clearly two major factors:
1. A lack of knowledge, or.
2. Ignorance."
