DEATHLY HALLOWS pt. 2

Here's the second part of my review.

Plot: The Trio searches for Horcruxes while everyone else tries to hold off the Death Eaters and we learn who’s really heroic, who’s really not so bad, and that some people just had to die.  That’s basically the plot of this book, but I like I said before, I really enjoyed it.  I think the Trio was stronger than ever, Harry and Hermione, and Harry and Ron really exemplified why they were friends, and you could tell that in all those years they had learned from each other.  I think all the strife and problems were very realistic for each of them, and again like I said before, I think this really was a Trio book.  I love that we finally got some real dates and concrete facts to place this book in a true time frame (although I’m not sure how well that’s going to stand up through time).  I like that you got this sense of family from everyone who was involved and trying to help Harry.  I like that Severus wasn’t so evil after all (he was still rather immoral, but not completely evil).  I love that Harry and Luna had that connection that they have, that connection that just can’t seem to be broken, just like him and Hermione, and him and Ron.  I think if there ever should have been a fourth, it should have been Luna.  Or Neville.  I love that we got to know about those other main characters: Dumbledore, Severus, a little of Lily.  I think having Severus and Lily be friends since childhood was really my favorite plot point.  It wasn’t just the result of a boyhood crush; she was his friend and then she wasn’t and then she was with his worst enemy.  I like that there wasn’t a lot of Ginny, although I’m not quite so sure this wasn’t a mistake because she’s supposed to be so important.  I like that Harry and Hermione can’t stop touching each other.  I like that he wanted to be the one to physically comfort her in Chapter Six but Ron got there first.  I like that despite her best efforts, both forced and not, she can’t help writing Harry/Hermione.  Or Harry/Luna.  I love that Dumbledore had secrets.  I love that he wasn’t perfect.  I love that Harry has always been this self-sacrificing but he didn’t die.  I love that we got to see that James was just as a good a parent as Lily was.  That he spent time with Harry, that he entertained his son and loved him. He did the same thing Lily did, he just died first.

Grievances: Albus Severus Potter.  ASP.  To paraphrase viennawaits: Is he a Parselmouth?  He better be a Parselmouth.  And why not Sirius.  Does every other thing Severus did not count because he was really working for Dumbledore?  He mindraped Harry in fifth year; he was willing to let him die when he was only an infant.  Not to mention, the last thing he wanted to see was Lily’s eyes before he died, yet he didn’t mind looking into them every year for six years and torturing their owner?  Doesn’t make any sense, JKR!  Dumbledore wasn’t perfect.  James wasn’t perfect.  Harry, Ron, Hermione - not perfect. Yet Ginny and Lily are beautiful, powerful witches and that makes them the object of every man’s desire?  We don’t see how they are powerful (other than Ginny and her Bat Bogies, and Lily dying for her son - which isn’t so much power as it is being a good mother), but are told they are.  We do get to see that Lily was independent, kind, loyal, and patient with Severus, which endears her to me, more than Ginny does.  Ginny is loyal, too, but I can’t see how growing up in the Weasley family would make you anything but, even Percy came around.  Fred died.  I will never forgive her for that.  Voldemort was not as much of a badass as I thought.  He came off more as a scared little boy, but I think Ralph Fiennes will fix that in the film (cuz he’s a scary, scary man). There was too much Polyjuice.  Are we sure Dumbledore wasn’t a Slytherin?  I’m seeing remarkable parallels between him and Draco.  I wish there had been more of the other characters, the ones who didn’t show up until the showdown at Hogwarts.  I think Lavender only died to appease Ron/Hermione shippers, I really do.  All the other Gryffindors in their year were okay, except her?  Most of all, I want a prequel.  I want to know more about James and Sirius because of the little glimpse I got of them, I think I could love them as much as I love Harry.  And if someone could just let me know why Lily is so freaking amazing and why Ginny should be/is just like her, I’ll love you forever.  That is quite a prize, let me tell you.

There’s so much more but that’ll have to wait a few months when I get around to rereading the book.

The Film:  I want it for Neville, Luna, the Trio, “…as she did so, she brushed the top of his head lightly with her hand.  He closed his eyes at her touch…”, and because the battle of Hogwarts was amazing and I can’t wait to see it on film. I hope they cut out some of the Polyjuice using in the scenes, though.  I want to see Harry and Hermione in Godric’s Hollow, not some balding man and his wife.  (How great was it that they were a married couple, though?)  I do want Clive Owen for when Harry Polyjuices into Runcorn, though.  He’s the only one I will accept.
