Just switched off the second episode of The Fringe after about fifteen-twenty minutes. It opens with a serial killer who has picked up a girl (possibly a prostitute) and is preparing to kill her when the weird freaky thing happens. Such a disappointment to see this within the first few minutes of a show that actually looked like it had some chance of being promising. Then (yes, i'm going to spoil the "twist") the girl starts acting weird, and you think it'll be a Joss-Whedon-style "fuck you" to the cliche, where it turns out it's the threatening male character that's in danger. But no, she dies. She dies because she had sex. And the threatening male character goes on to be the boring-as-all-hell lead for the heroes to investigate - because the audience is expected to be so fucking fascinated by him!
Am. So. Sick. Of. That. Garbage. It hasn't been original since Psycho. And it hasn't been entertaining ever. It's shitty, incompetent writing. It's anti-woman, it's anti-sex, it's actually fairly anti-male as well. It's anti-person. It's dehumanising bullshit, and it's a sad, pathetic relic of a conservative, un-self-aware era and an apparently HUGE population of writers with serious cases of barely-repressed misogyny.
I used to actually watch garbage like CSI, and genuinely didn't notice how often the victim was a woman, and how often she was sexualised in her death, until K pointed it out. Now i studiously avoid the five billion different shoddy, incompetent, piece-of-trash clones that preceded CSI (and came after it), but now it seems to be invading my science fiction! Not to mention the dumbarse serial killer movie that comes out every five months pretending to be all dark and brooding and meaningful, when it's just a festering load of regurgitated tripe that no amount of stylish casting can bring any respect to (Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie can't drag this crap up... it drags them down). Don't know what goes on in the heads of the pathetic tools that write this stuff. No longer care.
