1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Went to ATP.
Lived in Glasgow.
Various exams.
Medical stuff like chest drain insertion, femoral line insertion, ascitic drains etc.
Was involved in a terrifying high speed road traffic accident (that miraculously nobody was hurt in, I hasten to add).
2. Did you keep your goals/resolutions for 2010?
I did! I got a job I wanted, passed my Part 1 and got my DTM&H.
3. What was your favorite moment of the year?
Not sure. Maybe watching Belle & Sebastian at Bowlie with Nicola and Adam. Maybe DJing at Popfest Unpop or Valentines Unpop. Maybe watching Magnetic Fields at Manchester Cathedral. Maybe watching Allo Darlin at Indietracks. Too many to choose from!
4. What was your least favorite moment of the year?
Eek, again, too many to choose from! The day my nan died was pretty horrid, as were both my job interviews, as were all three times I sat the chuffing Part 1 before I passed the wretched thing. Also, there was one utterly bleak night shift when I was covering oncology in Edinburgh and everyone died and I sobbed all over my registrar. That was a real low.
5. What countries or states did you visit?
England. Not a very adventurous year for me.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
The letters MRCP after my name.
7. What date(s) from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
1st December when my nan died. :-(
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting my training post in Glasgow, getting my Part 1 and getting the DTM&H, having had to try and study and prepare for all of them simultaneously in just a few really tough months.
10. How did you celebrate Christmas?
With my family in Sheffield. We went to church, ate loads of food, gave presents and watched Doctor Who. It was pretty good.
11. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My friends in Edinburgh for continuing to be awesome, my new friend Sally in Glasgow for looking after me when I first moved here, the people I work with for being super supportive, the people I sat the DTM&H with for being excellent study buddies and the people who organised Popfest for putting on such a fun weekend.
12. What was the best new thing you got?
A godson was pretty exciting! As were the new job, the new flat and new letters after my name.
11. What did you pine for, but never get?
Another Christmas with my nan :-( (Sorry, this is a bit of an emerging theme).
14. Where did most of your money go?
After rent, it would have to be exam fees and revision materials. I think I spent about £1,700 doing the DTM&H and about £1,400 doing the Part 1 three times over.
15. What did you get really excited about?
Pavement ATP!!! Bowlie!!! Indietracks!!! Popfest!!! Moving to Glasgow!!!
16. What songs will always remind you of 2010?
My Heart Is A Drummer - Allo Darlin
When I'm With You - Best Coast
Calling Out Your Name Again - Darren Hayman
Giving Up On Love - Slow Club
Marathon - Tennis
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. Happier or sadder? Happier- I was so stressed by job applications and studying for exams this time last year; it was horrid.
II. Thinner or fatter? Probably about the same but I don't have scales to check for sure.
III. Richer or poorer? Tiny bit richer, but only in that I have paid off a tiny fraction of my student debts more than I had this time last year.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Seeing my friends and family. Dancing. Adventuring/ travelling.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Studying. Philip A. Kalra, I have sort of come to hate you and your hopelessly tedious book that I feel like I have read about a million times but still absorbed nothing from. Boo.
21. Did you fall in love?
Only with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Sherlock in the Stephen Moffat TV programme, which I don't think really counts.
22. What concerts did you attend?
A few, see above. And a fair few more besides.
23. What were your greatest musical discoveries?
I think I'm getting old; haven't really listened to a huge amount of new stuff this year. I really got into Dirty Projectors properly this year though, really enjoyed the Best Coast album and first heard Tennis.
24. What were your favorite new movies of 2010?
Four Lions
The Illusionist
Toy Story 3
25. Films that were dreadful include;
Didn't go to see anything bad this year. Win! I only achieved this by hardly going to the cinema at all though. Fail.
26. What were your favorite new TV programs?
Sherlock. Oh Stephen Moffat, I think I have a bit of a crush on you. And I definitely have a crush on Benedict Cumberbatch in that big swooshy coat.
27. Is there anything you would change about 2010?
Less grandparental death, less time spent studying alone in my flat, less of the whole Coalition terrifying programme of cuts.
28. Who/What kept you sane in 2010?
Nicola, Adam, Katya, Sally. God. Indiepop. Daim Bar Milka.
29. Did anyone you know die in 2010?
As mentioned above, my nan.
30. Did anyone you know get married this year?
Yeah loads of people, but nobody close enough that I went to any weddings.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 26 and I had the day off work. Hurrah! I went out for dinner at the Traverse with my pals, then we watched Midsummer, A Play With Songs, which was excellent, then I went out drinking with mroe friends at Teuchters. It was the best birthday I've had in a while.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Part "What is clean that doesn't need ironing?" part "Does this show too much leg for the hospital?" and a great big dollop of "Hurrah! Cheap tat from Primark!"
33. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned:
Hmm, struggling here. I suppose I've learned to trust in God more and have seen his bountiful provision for me more clearly.
34. Did you move in 2010? If so, to where?
I moved to a bigger, better flat in Glasgow. The rent is a bit more expensive than I can really afford but it's so nice, I don't really care!
35. Did you make any career changes in 2010?
Only in that I changed from being a foundation doctor to a core medical trainee. No more surgery/ paediatrics/ obstetrics/ psychiatry etc for me anymore! Pure medicine all the way.
36. What political issues stirred you the most?
Urgh, where to start?
37. Who are the new friends you made this year?
Charlotte and Rishwa from the DTM&H course, I got to know Nathan and Sarah a lot better whom we went to Bowlie with, I met a few new lovely folk through Unpop and Popfest and I've met tons of awesome people at my new hospital, a fair few of whom I would count as friends.
38. Name one thing about 2010 that changed your life:
Getting my job!
39. What are your goals/plans for 2011?
Try to get my full membership (two terrifying exams stand between me and this goal).
Have more adventures/ holidays.
See more of my friends.
Work out what I'm going to do after my core training finishes.
40. How did you celebrate the New Year?
With friends in Edinburgh watching fireworks over the castle from the Meadows. Yay!
