So, I'm about half way through Self Made Man, and it's incredibly depressing. It makes me want to scream at the world and wonder why God ever created sex and gender. I feel like gender, race, all that shit, just shouldn't exist. We should all be the same, and then we'd stop treating each other with such incredible prejudice.
The book isn't introducing me to any new ideas, but it's shoving a ton of things I tend to ignore all in my face at once. What makes it really depressing is how unnecessary all the shit she's describing is. If people stopped treating sex as something shameful, these horrible situations wouldn't exist. I was shaking my imaginary husband by the shoulders and screaming "GO AHEAD AND OGLE ME AND OTHER WOMEN, THAT'S FINE! IF YOU NEED A FUCK, SAY YOU NEED A FUCK AND I'LL LIE BACK AND THINK OF ENGLAND!"
Just, it's all so unnecessary. If we just said 'this is how it is' and worked around that, and treated each other as people rather than enemies... Ima stick with the queer world, mkay? As many problems as it has, at least your romantic partner isn't your enemy there.
