So bald cypress trees, the sight of which makes me wistful for Northern Florida, are apparently amazing. They routinely live like 600 years. There's a stand of them in the Black Forest Preserve in NC that are 1400 years old. Scientists called dendro-chronologists can study the trees' rings and reconstruct weather patterns, like hurricanes, that occured over 1000 years ago. Then they compare them w/the rings of younger trees to see effects of global warming.

I may have the wide-eyed wonder of science that only a formerly math-fearing wussy English major* can muster, but you must admit, that is really pretty cool.
