Who: badnotes & blameshimself Where: St. Andrew's Hospital When: April 19th when it is not dark Rating: PG Summary: Suguru's a jerk and disobeys Tohma. Shame. He really ought to be punished. the log: ( Medication was a wonderful thing. )
If Tohma had known Suguru was suffering from back pain he would have rushed over with some miracle cure-or at the very least he would have instructed someone to deliver it to his little cousin. That was, of course, if the back pain was from a hard bed. If it was from experimenting with Tatsuha, Suguru would just have to suffer, wouldn't he?
Unfortunately, Tohma was far too medicated to care about that right now or to even be considered awake. It had been a short while since his last dose of medication-it irritated him to no end that he needed to take four medications at once-and they were definitely taking effect. His concentration had flown out the window like one of those paper swans he'd made and whatever he'd been typing on the communicator-he couldn't remember whom he'd been talking to, nor the subject at the moment-remained unfinished.
Really, all he wanted to do was sleep. He was on his back with his eyes closed and one hand holding his communicator in case of an "emergency," but he just couldn't fall asleep. He was stuck in a horrible limbo between consciousness and unconsciousness, a place far worse than any recreational drug had the capability of taking him.
Somehow, through the haze of the medication Tohma despised, he heard someone walk into his room and take a seat nearby. Maybe it was the doctor who was going to watch him take his medication again. Wait. He'd already taken his medication for today... right? Ah, he couldn't remember anymore. The point was, he didn't need a doctor staring at him as he took his daily medicine. He was a big boy. He could down a few pills every day for the next... several months.
Tohma allowed a sigh to pass through his lips. Being in the hospital made him feel like a child who couldn't take care of himself. A child who wasn't even allowed to wear the clothes they wanted because they'd get in the way. Seguchi Tohma didn't wear t-shirts that made it evident just what kind of shape his body was in... unless Seguchi Tohma was in the hospital with Sohma Hatori looming overhead, apparently. He wanted his sweater back.
"Sohma-sensei, I already took my medicine, didn't I?" He raised his hand-the one still holding the communicator-with the intention of waving the person away dismissively, but his hand only rose a few inches from the bed before he realized it was being weighed down. "Oh, I'm still holding this thing...."
Not the doctor. That familiar voice said not the doctor, hadn't it? He knew who that voice belonged to then; he was sure of it. It was funny, because that voice didn't sound like the communicator and he knew his cousin didn't have the audacity to disrespect him by disobeying his orders. Right? Of course he was right.
Tohma was frowning now as he moved the hand with the communicator to his chest. No, he wasn't right at all. It was definitely Suguru sitting beside the bed. There wasn't a doubt in his mind about that, heavily medicated or not.
He turned his head in Suguru's direction and opened his eyes. Perhaps his glare wasn't very effective, but he was going to let his cousin know just how pissed off he was that he'd gone against his orders. He was too close and the air in the room was probably contaminated. Seriously, what was Suguru thinking?
"I can't believe you disobeyed me." Both the disappointment and worry he felt were evident in his voice.
It was an act of will that made Tohma lift himself into a sitting position and nothing more. He placed the communicator on the bed and crossed his arms over his chest as though to hide what wasn't there and stared aside for a while.
He really was grateful to see his cousin. Communicating through text and audio posts just wasn't enough and seeing him in person-knowing he was alive and well-was such a relief. But being so close to Suguru was dangerous. TB was contagious and being in such close proximity wasn't helpful. Immunized or not, there was no guarantee that Suguru wouldn't catch it as well. Tohma knew he was going to spend the next week or two being kept awake by the worry of that.
"I wasn't asleep." Well, at least he didn't think he'd been asleep. To be honest, he couldn't remember.
It wasn't any easier to keep his head clear sitting up than it was lying down. His entire body felt much too heavy like it was being held down by an anvil of some sort. Despite this, he glanced at his cousin again but still kept his head turned away.
He mustered as much energy he could and put on his smiling mask. "I told you not to come." His voice was serious despite the pleasant expression he wore. If he had to play the part of the big bad cousin to get Suguru to leave, he would.
Needed to come to the hospital? Why? What was wrong? And how was telling him not to worry actually going to prevent him from worrying? Despite his effort to maintain that cheerful smile, it melted away into a look of concern.
"Why? What happened? What's wrong?"
If Suguru was alone, then maybe Tatsuha had gotten sick, too. Or maybe it was Mika or even Ryuichi. Maybe he really had gotten others sick.
"Pain pills... Suguru-kun, be careful. If you take pain pills for too long, you'll get addicted to them. Your body won't make enough endorphins and you'll always need them." Right? That's how it worked... maybe. He didn't know for sure and the medicine kept him from thinking too hard. He was going to be on it for two to three months? Great.
Tohma watched his cousin carefully, noting his body language. Well, at least Suguru had kept his promise and didn't come alone. However, that didn't change the fact Suguru came in the first place after being told multiple times he wasn't allowed to come.
"You're going to get sick," he said slowly. How selfish was he going to be today? Would he let Suguru stay and risk him falling ill, or would he do the right thing and make him leave?
"You can't-" Tohma doubled over and clamped his hands over his mouth half a second before he coughed. Dammit, he thought as he felt the tiny flecks of blood splatter against the palms of his hands. It was a good fifteen seconds before the coughs subsided and he found himself unable to look at his cousin.
Suguru was going to get sick. He knew it and it would be all his fault.
Tohma turned away from him and wished that he could move away. He refused to take the towel or remove his hands from his mouth. Not when doing so could possibly put his cousin in the same condition as himself.
Suffering for them? That was far from the truth. He had gotten sick because he'd been careless. Sure, he may have gotten to take care of one of his greatest idols, but look at the price it had cost him.
Tohma shook his head and found himself coughing a few more times into his hands. He was going to need a lot of disinfectant, wasn't he? It was almost a little amusing, now that he thought about it. If he had just kept a cloth or a towel nearby, his hands wouldn't be so bloody. But at least the blood was his own.
"You need to leave," he said through the coppery taste of blood, his hands still pressed over his mouth.

He couldn't win, could he? No matter how hard he tried to keep Suguru away, he just wouldn't listen. He was stubborn like Eiri, but that's where the similarities stopped. Eiri probably wouldn't care whether or not Tohma practically had a death sentence. Suguru did. At least, that's what it looked like.
And why had Suguru mentioned Okita, anyway? The way Suguru put it, Tohma was a selfless hero with a heart of gold. Hah. He was far from that. He considered telling his cousin just how wrong he was, but the sudden prospect of gifts made him stare curiously at Suguru instead.
What could he have brought? There wasn't much in this city. Hopefully they weren't things that Suguru would have more use for. "You did?" he said quietly, keeping the towel Suguru had forced into his hands near his mouth in case he started coughing again.
