hello internet it's me laura
I got back sometime yesterday afternoon, went to bed at like 7, woke up at four, and now here I am. There's actually so much shit I need to do now that I'm back, but instead it seemed like fun to post pictures on the internet.
Here are some picture from the first two days I was away. On the second day, we went on the most insane walking tour of the city, which was great for seeing stuff, but I'd just spent two weeks hunched over a computer and my back was like, "this hurts, :(" Then the morning of the third day, I totally threw out my back getting ready in the morning. Homework is dangerous, :( I missed some of the planned activities, went to the doctor, who gave me the opposite advice of the Canadian doctor I saw the last time this happened. She had told me to stay in bed, but this guy said to push it as much as possible and that it doesn't really matter if it hurts. So, I continued on with the trip as normally as possible, even though my roommate had to put on my socks and tie my shoes in the morning. Oh god.
Anyway, I'm not a doctor, but I wanted to report that walking it off healed me 100% faster than lying in bed, even though it also felt like so much painful torture. Not that walking 8 hours a day wouldn't feel kind of like torture anyway, holy crap. By the end of the trip, my back was a lot better but my feet were like I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO US.
But I saw a lot and learned a lot and I'm super happy I went and now I will show you some really random pictures.
We were staying right across the street from George Square.
This is George Square:
It was cold as hell over there, holy crap. Everyone kept being like, "LOL, Canadians won't think this is cold," but the Canadians on this trip were shivering the entire time, it was ridiculous. Plus it was very overcast and often just on the cusp of raining.
But the trees were changing pretty colors.
This is what the side of a building looked like. Crazy, huh?
By the modern art gallery (I'm sure this area has a name, but I can't remember it), they hung a net of stars between the buildings. This is what it looked like during the day:
This is what it looked like at night:
I don't know that these pictures really capture it, because my camera is not in love with the idea of taking pictures at night, but oh my gosh it was so beautiful.
It seems cheesy, but it actually felt like being under a blanket of stars.
This is the statue outside of the art gallery, lol.
The gallery used to be a HOUSE for some rich dude, but not it seems to have been converted mostly for community involvement stuff, like children's art.
There were really cool stained glass windows, though.
Glasgow was called the Second City of the Empire, way back when. It was an industrial city that experienced a lot of decline, so I think we were all surprised by how gorgeous it still is. Most of the buildings were just completely epic.
But I guess it's not like, 100% in mint condition.
A whole bunch of pictures from the river:
This was hilarious. It had that, "it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees" quote, and then what looked like a nun punching the air.
And then clouds,
and the ground, idk
I had to take pictures from the assignments that'll be due, but then I also got a little bored sometimes and took pictures of random things.
The city had a pretty major building cleaning project, because the soot from industry had turned all of the buildings black. You can still see the buildings that haven't been cleaned.
There was this insane mass of pigeons.
I took pictures, because, you know, there are no pigeons in Canada. :/
There really are cobble stone street everywhere.
This is possibly Glasgow Cross. There are these blue clock towers everywhere and I definitely got a picture of Glasgow cross, but I also got pictures of the other blue clocks and now I can't remember which is the real one.
I'm grouping these together mostly chronologically, so that was day one, and now here's George Square again on day two.
This is the exact same building, but each half was cleaned using a different stone cleaning technique.
rainbows!
One of those spiral thinger buildings!
I was really taken with the places that you could see plants growing out of the buildings. It's funny to think of how humans took over this land, but then the moment they turned their backs, the plants are taking their territory back.
I think this is the old Main Street.
The most common type of stonework on the buildings makes it look like a city full of watercolor paintings.
Seriously, doesn't this look like a watercolor?
Plants striking back...
This is Princes Square. The picture doesn't capture it, but it's SUCH a cool 'mall'.
This bridge wobbles like crazy when you walk on it.
Glasgow public art.
LOL IT LOOKS LIKE SEX TOYS.
Aren't these trees pretty?
Except for how I hate almost everything about it, fall can be pretty awesome.
Greenery attacking a church!
And finally, more public art.
Some people were like, "Are those boys," but a lot of other people thought it was completely amazing.
