spoilers for Mad Men

Just watched this week's Mad Men: killerrrrrrr.

Doing the stuff with how Don got hired was brilliant. The contrast between how he was when he started and how he is now and that he used the fact that Roger was drunk to get himself hired, omggggggggggg. I'm feeling kind of flaily now with how awesome that was.

It seems like people think it's not as good this season (and by people, I mostly mean my parents, who are the only one's I know who watch it. Plus I heard that ratings have dropped), but I think there's a difference between the show being not as likable and being not as good.

The thing that I think is cool about Mad Men is that they'll shine a light in all the dark corners. We've spent the last three seasons all, "How do they drink so much? !!! It's the middle of the day!" There's always such a meta aspect of the show, and this in particular feels almost like a conversation with the audience: "Well, yeah, but they can't pull it off forever."

It's so interesting how Don's always used Roger's drinking against him (in the earlier season, when he takes Roger out for martinis and raw oysters and arranges to have the elevator broken so they have to walk up the stairs before the important meeting). Don always was fairly disdainful of Roger -- which makes the "how he got hired" story even more interesting -- so it's pretty horrifying to see how he's turning into him.

The magic of Don Draper was that he was able to pull of things that seemed impossible, and it's definitely not as much fun to see all his crap catching up with him, but I still think they're doing a really awesome job with it. Don's not a romantic character anymore, and it's still so strange to see him as the sleazy boozehound creeping on women at parties. But a lot of his suaveness came from the fact that he was married and he just wasn't hungry for it. I miss Betty's presence on the show, but the divorce does make things new and interesting.

And then, speaking of Betty. Oh man, last week's episode? Gah. It was so brutal -- with the way the mom at the sleepover reacted to Sally. And then the way Betty reacted, and then how they tie it all up with the line in the psychiatrists office about how she always did it privately and then it was less frequently when she got older. I can't remember what the exact quote was, but gahhhhh. I don't know how they always manage to do that with Betty, but you hate her and hate her and hate her and then there's this moment of vulnerability where suddenly you can understand what's really going on for her, and then you still don't like her but... God, and then how she said that her mother threatened to cut off her hair when she was bad?

Loved Peggy making the hipster friends. Loved her putting that jackass in his place this week. Loved every single minute Joan was on screen.

I don't like the show, but I still love it.
