(A friend and I usually style it "sekkrit cutter", because it shows up in a lot of badfic prone to melodrama and implausibility. But self-harm is a serious thing and shouldn't be used as a plot device in a major television drama. I've never watched Grey's Anatomy, but from everything I've heard it's gotten way worse recently?)

It isn't a plot device on the show. The interns were cutting themselves/each other to practice giving stitches. It had nothing to do with actual self injury. One of the characters went around accusing another character of being a "secret cutter" which I found really annoying. The show is definitely getting worse.
