It’s a bright, freezing cold November morning in Hell’s icebox, also known as Minneapolis, Minnesota, and out of nowhere, Ricky’s iPhone starts blasting a loud guitar riff, buzzing like a crazy bee on the glass tabletop.
There’s something familiar to the music, and it takes Kevin a moment to recognize it.
“Is that the 007 theme?” he asks, arching up both his eyebrows; Ricky doesn’t even look at him, though, because he’s very busy scrambling around to reach the phone. He almost falls off the couch in the attempt, but he finally gets his hands on it and takes the call.
“Hey,” he says, his mouth curling up in a slow grin, one of the earnest ones where he shows too much teeth and his eyes get all crinkled.
Kevin shakes his head, but turns down the TV anyway. He leans into Ricky’s shoulder a bit, because if he can’t even eavesdrop his calls then what’s the fun in being friends, but, much to his dismay, the conversation turns out to be in Spanish, so there’s not much for him there.
Ricky sticks out his tongue at him, and then his focus shifts back to the phonecall.
“¿Un unicornio, Ricky? ¿En serio?” Juan Carlos is saying, and he doesn’t sound particularly annoyed, just his usual grumpy-but-vaguely-endeared self. Ricky smiles. “¿Tienes idea de lo dificil que es incontrar un unicornio?”
“Pues, he oído que pueden ser criaturas bastante tímidas, sí,” he says, biting his lip. “Quin es, ¿la Elsa, o la Lucía?”
“Las dos,” Juan Carlos huffs, a little sharply. “Por lo menos, los regalos de Navidad ya están escogidos.”
Ricky gives his best schoolgirl giggle.
“Lo siento,” he lies through a smile; when Juan Carlos snorts, he knows he didn’t buy it for half a second. Ricky feels warm and happy and very, very proud of his spot-on ringtone-choosing skills.
