Grudgematch: True Blood v. Twilight (and other stuff)

Aug 24, 2010 15:01

Ah, LJ how I fail at you.

I've nearly posted so many times in the past few months but I get to the daunting update page and my fingers just won't type :(. I've spent the last little while lurking like a lurking lurker who lurks and only occasionally posting. I fail. I think its because most of my main shows finished for the summer so I sort of fell out of fandom. Hopefully, this will change for September. However, this monster post probably won't improve my posting habits but I just needed to exorcise some demons. Air my generally rampaging (and spoilery) thoughts. *crosses fingers that it will last* And I'm currently at work and bored. :D

WARNING! In this post there are spoilers for True Blood and Twilight

I'm INCREDIBLY obsessed with True Blood at the moment. Yes, it has its faults. Yes, its not always very good. Yes, its often melodramatic. Yes, its overly obsessed with the Sookeh/Beel dramatically dull romance, but BY GOD there is sex, blood, violence, death, and dry one-liners (thank you, Pam!). I know people do this all the time but just allow me to compare True Blood with the ever popular Twilight. This is because I just don't understand why anyone would actively seek out Twilight when True Blood exists.

WARNING! there will be Twilight bashing because this is my journal and if you find that offensive look away now

All pictures are courtesy of Mr Google, with the exception of Jason who was capped beautifully by potthead.

So, okay, maybe the human pictures were slightly unfair (I admit it, I just wanted to post a picture of lovely but dim Jason), but this is my journal so I can do what I want.

Not only does True Blood have MEN in it rather than just Dead Boys, they are Frickin Hot Men (as evidenced above). The beauty of True Blood (apart from the hot men) is that they actually cast GOOD ACTORS. Strange, foreign concept, I know.

Oh, yeah, and the other strange thing about True Blood is that it actually HAS PLOT. It might be demented plot, involving orgies, fanatical churches, missing sherrifs, serial killers, insane (but awesome) Vampire Kings, but it still has plot. More plot than, say, 'oh I love this vampire but then he decides he doesn't want me because I want him too much but then I go insane and start screaming in my sleep, then there's this fugly werewolf who should really cut his hair and then he does and he's still fugly, then the vampire boyfriend tries to sparkle himself to death in Italy while tourists are just trying to take a picture of the Vatican and really could do without vampires sparkling down their camera lenses and messing up the shot and then FORGET ALL THE REASONS I HAD ABOUT NOT BEING TOGETHER BEFORE, WILL YOU MARRY ME?

I think I'm probably going to have to post a general squeeage post for the last True Blood episode because it was awesome in several billion ways. And hot. WAY HOT. This level of hot:

AND ITS NOT A DREAM!!!!

*ahem*

*fans self*

On a slight less obsessive note, last week I watched the whole first season of little known CW drama Life Unexpected. Its not a genre show, its just a drama, which isn't usually my sort of show, but I loved it. Its hilarious, sweet without being cloying, and the romance has me hooked (although Ryan is a sweetie, Baze and all his idiotness has my heart...I'm defintely a Baze/Cate shipper). If you don't know what its about, this is the gist of the plot: Cate (the bookworm) at age 16 got knocked up after a one time thing at Winter Formal in High School by Baze (the quarterback) and she gave the kid up for adoption. 15 years later, the girl turns up on their doorsteps, wanting their signatures so she can get emancipated. Instead, the judge grants them temporary care of the girl, Lux, which causes all sorts of hijinks since Cate is a radio DJ engaged to her co-star and Baze runs a not-really-that-successful bar and hasn't really ever grown up. And its BRILLIANT! Has anyone else seen it? PLEASE tell me someone besides me has seen it.

What I find difficult is tthese shows barely have a fandom, at least not one that is easy to slide into. Life Unexpected doesn't have one at all, which isn't that strange since nobody but me watches it. And with True Blood its like drawing blood from a stone (pun intended) getting into the fandom. There are lots of TB comms but none as wonderful as the Merlin peeps with people who just sort of psychically 'get' what you mean and what you feel about fandomy things. TB was on TV on Sunday night. I must be in at least 6 TB comms. Where are the millions of icons? Where are the gifs? Where is the squeeage? Where is the fanfic? THERE IS NONE. Its depressing. Does anyone know any good and active TB comms? I fear that the Merlin fandom has completely spoiled me for future fandoms by being so awesome.

EDIT: Why did I have no tag for True Blood but I had a tag for Twilight? I'm ashamed of myself...

squee, show: true blood, life unexpected, film: twilight, obsessed
