I'm just watching Superman Returns on tv at the moment and you know what? Suddenly I hate it. I didn't hate it when I first watched it but slowly its driving me insane (Actually, I think it correlates with my sudden obsession with Smallville
).
There are four things that I have a major problem with:
1) The plot is one of the worst things in recent cinema. That kid, the crystal growing bits of land, blah blah blah, one of the most tedious plots ever.
2) Lex Luthor. He was rubbish. He wasn't even camp like Gene Hackman was. He's just boring, over the top, two dimensional and rubbish. Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville is my favourite Lex, he brings so much depth to the role.
3) Lois Lane. She's without a doubt the worst incarnation I've ever seen. Lois is meant to be feisty, have spirit, gumption, but this Lois is dowdy, bland, miserable and unbelievably boring. Once again, Smallville's Lois is much more likeable, as is Teri Hatcher's Lois in The New Adventures of Superman.
4) The homage to the original Superman films. I think Brian Singer who made this film was too big of fan to do it justice. He's a slave to Richard Donner's version, instead of telling his own version.
HOWEVER! Brandon Routh was excellent. He was the best thing in this film. This film should've been awesome but it just wasn't. The more I see it the more I'm just really disappointed.
What a crapfest. Even the special effects were tedious. I maintain that it doesn't matter how awesome the SFX is if the plot is this weak.
