Toshiya & Shinya
DIR EN GREY
DIR EN GREY, who does not follow a fixed point and who is constantly going deeper.
Along with being the trajectory of this cataclysmic band, that cornerstone created by Toshiya and Shinya as the rhythms section increases the awesomeness and deepness of this band.
Here, we thoroughly ask them from these 2 people’s meeting, their evaluation of each other, and their future prospects.
Combining intelligence and skills, through these 2 people who preside over the band’s subtlety and heavy groove’s particularities, you can definitely see the awesomeness of the band called DIR EN GREY.
I thought that if I didn’t talk to him it may be something that I would regret for the rest of my life
--Both of you “first met each other” when DIR EN GREY was formed?
Shinya: No, before that, our bands did a live together. But I don’t really remember much from that time. I knew the name of the band that Toshiya was in but I really didn’t know them personally.
--Because there were other bands, there were also times when people seem unnecessarily cold.
Shinya: No, I didn’t think that I was cold (laughs). It’s because we normally played with other bands.
Toshiya: It's was as what Shinya said but it’s a bit different from the truth (laughs). At that time, I was already in Tokyo but since the bassist left in my senior’s band in Nagano, he called me and I joined their band as support. Then, my band’s and their band’s staff were good friends and it started from talking of wanting to do a live together. Because of that when they did a live at the Club GIO in Ichikawa, I went and watched them. This was in order to greet them and let them know that we will be playing together next time. At that, I think our bands did one live together at a live house in Nagano. But when our bands played together, actually my band was already close to breaking up. When I thought of what was I going to do next, I saw their live and when I thought that they seemed like an interesting band, I also heard that their band seemed ending, during the party I think Kyo spoke to me. He said, “Want to be in a band together? (laughs)”. Kyo seemed to have watched our live, and talked about keeping in contact after that.
--Kyo mentioned that at that time the only person whom his shy self exchanged phone numbers with was only Toshiya.
Toshiya: Aah. He was really shy. We were both shy. But our sense of smell worked, right? Even if we’re shy, if we don’t talk to him now then it would be something that we’d regret all our life. I think it was a chance or fate. When he was talking about playing together in a band, I think Kaoru was there right beside him (laughs). When you look at what we were talking about, I suddenly thought that this guy was asking something crazy and telling me stuff. Suddenly proclaiming that with conviction (laughs). I felt like asking, “Are you really disbanding?”
--What aspect were you drawn to them?
Toshiya: Let’s just say that they had energy/vigor. Yeah, I think that was it (laughs).
