Despite JPeg being a total girl, taking ages to leave in the morning we got to Soundwave nice and early and had a super awesome day. Was totally bummed to hear that Less Than Jake had to cancel their Brisbane performance because of flight delays, as I was very excited to see them but I was still highly, highly, highly anticipating seeing Anberlin live for the first time. Unfortunately Anberlin's sound was way off. The vocals for the first 2 or 3 songs were completely drowned out as was pretty much all their treble. The vocals got better after that but then they only played 5 songs and finished 10 minutes early! OUTRAGEOUS! I'll still pay to see them live headlining thier own show to give them a second chance, but if it turns out to be the same kind of deal I'll be super disappointed.
New Found Glory, Billy Talent and Nine Inch Nails were definitely the highlights of the day. I loved loved loved Billy Talent's set. I hadn't heard much of their stuff before, but I really wanted to see them and they impressed me muchly. New Found Glory were super fun as always and announced they're touring Australia again later this year which I will definitely not be missing! NIN were just plain impressive and becuase it was the end of a long day and we're both old, we got an awesome seat up in the stadium with a very excellent view of the stage to chill out and watch.
There was a Subway stall set up which was great! I normally get a bit nervous of festival food cause I'm not a fan of weiners and everything seems to be stuffed with a shiny red weiner! Dagwood dogs, hot dogs and.. well that's about it really but Subway was yummos and not ridiculously overpriced. We giggled at the German Sausage Hut a couple of times during the day, but we were just being shy.... Cheese Kransky's all round! They were delicious and INTENSE and I think we both felt a bit blergh not long after eating them. But it wasn't a problem that couldn't be solved with 600mL bottles of Coke for $5 a pop! outRAAAAAAGEOUS (i had a STROOOOKKEEEE)
Rammstein, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and others were also super awesome and I have come to the conclusion that I much more enjoy festivals when I don't drink at them. If you want to see the first bands (which I generally always do) it's a pretty big day and QLD sun on my pale pale skin doesn't help. Everytime I drink at a festival I think I get a bit stressed out that I'm going to overdo because of the heat and stuff and it just makes the day so much less enjoyable.
Sounds of Spring were at RNA showgrounds and it wasn't an awesome set up so I was a bit worried when Soundwave announced they were moving to RNA this year.... HOWEVER... it was completely and utterly GREAT. Better set up than Big Day Out even... BDO should move to RNA too. I didn't realise RNA was so huge as they opened up more areas for Soundwave and it was definitely well done. Soundwave definitely lived up to their improvement promises after the disasters of 2008. The queue was MASSIVE but we were only in it for about 20 minutes. The drinking areas were much MUCH bigger and better set up. If I HAD have been drinking though I may have been a little disappointed because they kept the same exorbitant prices but only sold midstrength EVERYTHING. Even spirits were all midstrengths. Crazy in the half drunk coconut!
When we arrived there was a sushi stand set up ... two hand rolls for TEN DOLLARS WHOOOOAAAA.... but when we left.. they were a dollar each so we stocked up and after Josh inhaled his we realised we should have bought more.
All in all super fun radalicious day. Ooohhhh I have missed going to gigs so much. Can't wait for BOT.
