7. Monster
“Monster” has perhaps the best transformation by an actress in decades. Charlize Theron plays real life serial killer Aileen Wuornos, convicted and executed for the murder of 7 men in Florida between 1989 and 1990. “Monster” is an interesting serial killer film, as it does not focus enirely on the murders, but rather the love story between Aileen Wuornos and Selby Wall (Christina Ricci). Having a female director at the helm of the film gives “Monster” a different feel than many other true to life serial killer movies, making audiences sympathetic to the main character.
“Monster” was released on December 17, 2003 and grossed over $60 million, well above its $8 million budget. Theron took home the Academy Award, Golden Globe and SAG Award for her performance, one that Roger Ebert described as an “embodiment” of Wuornos.
