Reason Kajillion and 1

Add these interviews to the heaps of reasons why I have so much respect for Mary McDonnell and Jamie Bamber.

Some great discussions of the clashes between Laura and Lee below.

Mary's interview here (spoilery for "Revelations") rocks my socks. So eloquent and insightful.

When she says Laura had an eye on Lee as her successor, I wonder when does she mean? I've always had this secret theory that she first started to feel that way at the end of "Bastille Day," when Lee says that by giving Zarek the elections he only committed them to obeying the law -- and later tells her that she has his vote. Aww!

And here's a bit of the Hypaspace podcast interview with JB I typed up, on Lee's role as a politician:

"He is an idealist, I’d like to think of him as sort of a pragmatic idealist. He knows what is right and what is wrong, but he is willing to admit that it’s not always possible to do what is right in order to achieve the ends that he needs; sometimes you have to admit that the situation calls for a different approach.

I think that’s what his trial speech was all about at the end of season 3 -- it’s all very well saying “this is a democracy” and “this is justice,” but we don’t live in the kind of time that has -- we don’t have room or time or space, or we don’t have the calm for that kind of process. Leaders have to make autocratic decisions in desperate moments. Wars are not a time to throw it open to the floor, and he understands that.

But he’s been through a very difficult time with the President. He’s tried to help her, in his eyes; he’s trying to sort of rework the performance element of her leadership, and the people are getting disillusioned with her slightly secretive way of leading, and the Quorum are getting extremely disenfranchised with her because they don’t feel they have a say in anything that goes on. They don’t feel they can represent the people. So Lee starts off this season 4 arc by trying to put a bit of spin back into Laura’s presidency; but Laura sees him as a threat after this trial where he got Baltar acquitted, and she won’t give him the time of day, and they clash."

That is so amazing because I've always thought that Lee really meant what he said when he was being sworn in as a Quorum member, that Roslin is his inspiration. It fits with what he told Zarek, too, that a benevolent dictator is exactly what they need right now. And I do think he's been trying to help her.

I just love it when they fight, though -- Roslin and Adama are stubborn people who need someone just as stubborn to butt heads with them at times, in order to act as a balancing force. Somebody's got to be a pain in the ass for civil liberties! And he's so good at being a pain when he has to, hee. :D

Much love for MM and JB!
