For sanity I try to visualize my PhD as a battle against a mob of tiny people forming acrobatic pyramids of annoying oversight ( Read more... )

What inspired you to think of me? Did someone see that ridiculous book on your shelf and ask who the hell would troll so hard?

I've been back in the lower mainland for about three weeks.

I'm surprised to see you here replying so quickly to my post. I suspect you feel similarly nostalgic for this platform.

I have spent the last five years on a mix of school in England and working to pay for that schooling. A feeling of general exhaustion from both those things led to no longer making the effort to keep in touch with friends, reducing my social circle to work acquaintances (barely) and the occasional sms with Matthew, who is unlikely to ever return to Vancouver. Neglecting to use facebook seems to have had the effect of disappearing me from everyone's radar, which is probably for the best. I have a hard time imagining a version of myself who was a social butterfly with the energy to keep in touch with so many. Though I do miss the sense of belonging to a community and have no idea how one would recreate that without expending energy and time.

If inclined toward flattery, you could characterize my current life as a less successful, more resentful, equally impoverished, hermit-like Yoda character.

And board gaming became my mid life crisis and got out of hand.

Nothing all that exciting really, it's been a pretty bland yet frustrating five years.

LJ sent me an email that you updated :) but I do feel nostalgic for this as well. I'm not sure what made me think of you; sometimes people pop into my head randomly and I think about how much I miss them.
My social life and circle has been similarly reduced, though not to quite the same extent as yours. My daughter is almost 3 1/2 now, and parenthood sucked for the first 3 years.
You wanna hang out with us? Do you like kids? Stella is pretty rad now that she's potty trained and can have a conversation.

I don't know what to do with kids but I don't dislike them.

Potty trained is good. I hope one day to reach this state of development myself.

My number is still the same if you've got it.
I have a major deadlines on the 3rd and 15th which have a tendency to give me tunnel vision, but if I had a therapist I'm sure they'd insist that I should make a point of going outdoors.
