lunacy is much more fun when it’s shared

For the first time in 18 months, I worked a full 8 hours straight through - eating lunch at my desk. But at least it was good Thai from a place that I've not had in more than 18 months; it was lovely. The teachers are back, and it's so weird to have other people on the floor for more than a couple of minutes! I managed to get through *most* of the incredible stack of new applications - of course they almost doubled over the weekend, so there was no way I could finish everything, but I got most done. There's a pile which need calls to the family for more info (especially the ones missing parents last name or DOB, as they anchor the family record) but R said she could help with that Tuesday. Even if she doesn't get them all done, I'm hopeful there won't be too many more new applications waiting Wednesday, so I can finish them, and hopefully as tackle the other crap which is still not complete. Happily those tasks shouldn't take too much time once I can get to them.

Maybe not so lost? A selective breeding program is producing zebra foals with many of the salient characteristics of the quagga (a linked pdf has photos, and I can see it). Quagga: The Lost Zebra - Why the Quagga is "Lost": Large scale hunting in South Africa in the 1800s exterminated many animals, and quaggas were hunted to extinction in the late 1800s. They were valuable for their meat and hides, and people wanted to preserve the vegetation quaggas fed on for domesticated livestock. In addition, few people realized that the quagga was distinct from other zebras and needed protection. The last wild quagga was probably killed in the 1870s, and the last captive quagga died in an Amsterdam zoo on August 12, 1883.

There are tons of adorable cats (and some great dogs) in this collection of newly adopted pets

Em3 didn't say anything about my schedule changing, so I guess the old one will be in force for at least this week - not that it mattered today, when I worked two 'extra' hours. I hope so, cuz I ordered groceries for Thursday morning. I will have to resume something closer to FT soon, as we need to order office supplies, and deliveries are starting to arrive for managers

Question of the Day
Would you prefer hardwood flooring or carpet in your home?
I grew up in houses with hardwood floors, but most of my apartments as an adult have had carpeting. this place is mostly laminate, with carpeting in the bedrooms (and a rug I put down in the middle of the living room. the big advantage of carpet is a reduction in freezing feet when it's cold. but I really prefer hard floors - both for the look, and also the ease of sweeping instead of constantly vacuuming (not that I do)

How Annie Oakley, “Princess of the West,” Preserved Her Ladylike Reputation
Born in 1860, the famed female sharpshooter skillfully cultivated an image of a daredevil performer with proper Victorian morals
From the second she began shooting-first to put food on the table and only later as an entertainer-there was no denying Oakley’s knack for the sport. After meeting and marrying Frank Butler, she performed for years in the vaudeville circuit before joining Buffalo Bill’s show in 1885. She quickly became known as a maid of the West, performing stunts like shooting clay pigeons out of the air with a rifle while standing atop a galloping horse.

Entertaining animal memes/tweets, filled with smiles

The photo is astounding (and heartwrenching, when you think of how many remain who won't make it out): Inside Reach 871, A US C-17 Packed With 640 Afghans Trying to Escape the Taliban - A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III safely evacuated some 640 Afghans from Kabul late Sunday, according to U.S. defense officials and photos obtained by Defense One.

MacKenzie Scot does it again! (locally this time). United Way Gift Allows Big Expansion of Bybee Lakes Hope Center - The fortune Amazon built will allow the expansion of the Bybee Lakes Hope Center from 126 to 318 beds.

That’s a big boost for the emergency shelter in a North Portland structure formerly owned by Multnomah County and called the Wapato Jail. The United Way of the Columbia-Willamette is giving Bybee Lakes $1.2 million for the expansion. The money is part of a $20 million gift United Way received from MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. I do admire her selection of programs to support so generously.

Don't you feel smarter now? *looks for ducks, so I can practice*
