There's another heat wave coming - it's not supposed to be as hot as in June, but Thursday's predicted ~104 doesn't sound too wonderful. I'm not scheduled to work that day, but luckily I have fans, cold water and now the new AC unit, which might not cool the entire place down (the size of my open plan living/dining/kitchen space will likely make that impossible) but it should help a bunch.
go, Diné !!
Heard tonight that the Navajo nation has a vaccination rate of 91%, which is awesome. Too bad the rest of America can't say the same.
I'm really not sure what's causing Olivier's dislike of the recliner but he's only voluntarily hopped up on the arm of the chair once in the past several days now. He'll get on the ottoman and lie down, or sit and stare at me, will put his front feet on the chair arm if I've got something tempting, but usually won't come all the way up.
Beau talks about what makes a 'real' tough guy - and it's not the performative shit T.Cruz gets up to. his admiration of the two people he does label tough guys is palpable - and lovely, as one is his wife.
Let's talk about two Florida tough guys.... The header starts out '
Power Of Love' and it's so true, as proven by these before & after adoptions photos.
Multnomah County has now mandated masks for everyone age five and up in all public indoor spaces - so no more non-masked folks in businesses. This is good, but so far they're the only county to do so - I just wish the rest of the state would join in.
With the Borden Murder House in New Hands, Will Real History Get the Hatchet? For the amateur detectives who are still trying to solve the case, the recent developments are causing consternation
Both the murder house and the house Lizzie bought after her acquittal recently went on the housing market. The latter residence, lavish and furnished, remains unsold, but the more modest murder house, which has operated as a themed bed-and-breakfast since 2004, sold to entrepreneur Lance Zaal in May for close to $2 million. The owner of Ghost Adventures, Zaal plans to paranormalize the site with a bigger emphasis on capturing the ghostly echoes from its former inhabitants. Along with the daily preexisting 90-minute house tour, he has added a 90-minute ghost tour and a two-hour ghost hunt. He’s planning to launch a podcast, virtual experiences, themed dinners, bedtime ghost tours of Fall River, and murder mystery nights. “We want to get the Lizzie Borden story into the hands of more people,” he says. He sees the house as a wedding venue and plans to refit the cellar to create a rentable bedroom to join the existing six. He especially wants guests to video themselves reacting to paranormal phenomena in the house.
Question of the Day
What craft project do you want to do next?
this seems to be assuming I've been doing craft projects! honestly, you'd think with all the downtime I've had in the past 18 months, I'd have accomplished *something* besides fic reading, but nope. I do have a cross-stitch project lined up, and have had every intention of starting it since Xmas of 2019, but somehow that's jut not happened. I really should get on that.
When in need, be sure to call a professional!

This CBS Evening News segment seriously choked me up - what an amazing gift, so all can enjoy the ocean.
Volunteers make Florida beach accessible to all - Many people who are paralyzed or have disabilities don’t have access to beaches. Volunteers in Miami Beach, Florida, are trying to change that.
It looks like they're inspecting around around seven units each day - if they continue five days a week, it'll likely be midweek next week when they hit my place. This is good to know - I assume there will be a 24-hr notice on the door, or at least one of those e-mails announcing it. I'd e-mailed requesting clarification on what to do with pets, and got this: "We ask that you put them in a crate if possible. If you not able to crate your animal you can put them in one of the bedrooms if you are not going to be home. You do need to leave us a note on the door of the room as a reminder not to go in due to pet being inside." I guess this is good to know, but as you can't leave a cat in a carrier all day without access to food/water/litter box, I'll be shutting Olivier in his room with a note on the closed door. I responded something to that effect and got this back "Sounds good! I'm not sure if you are aware but inspections are only till 12:00pm so I don’t know if that helps." - which, no, it doesn't really help. If I'm at work, I'll be at work all day, s having them in and out before noon doesn't mean I'll magically be home to let him out.
Squirrels Use Parkour Moves and Savvy to Stick Tricky Landings - Despite all the variables researchers threw at their bushy-tailed study subjects, the squirrels never fell, per the Times. Even when things didn’t quite go as planned, the squirrels were able to just barely clasp the landing branch with their front paws and swing their bodies up and over onto their new perch.
An interesting profile of a woman who's impressed me a lot since she took the podium - it's great to learn more about her background, and get an idea of who the person is, not just the figure speaking:
Press Secretary Jen Psaki is Good At Mending Fences. Just Don’t Call Her Nice. *runs screaming around the room, flailing and shrieking "aaaaaaaaaaaah!" in glee*
