It was cooler, which was wonderful. It 'only' hit 82F, tolerable even without AC. Which was good as I didn't go to work - woke with a migraine and called out. I'm going in Wednesday, and hopefully it won't be completely slammed. The next few days are supposed to be close to this temp, though I've heard it'll be hotting up again and there's a prediction of 105 or so by next Tuesday. I hope to hell that's not true.
Brief update from my sister - apparently Steph & kids arrive at midnight Wednesday. She's picking them up from the airport, which will make a long day for all. She made noises about maybe dropping off Rica's stuff, but it really doesn't make much sense - better for her to save her energy and take an evening nap instead of planning time to detour, even if it's not for a long visit. I guess Tim is driving up with the dogs, and likely to arrive on Friday. They'll be in Oregon for about a month, so I've time to sort out a time to go visit with everyone
Accept your fate, hooman -
you're a cat bed, and you know it
It's hard to know if it's pure carelessness or what, but I read a story where the author interchanged 'trial' (the intended word) and 'trail' throughout. Not just once or twice, but all the damn time, occasionally even in the same paragraph. It was irritating, but as trail is an actual word, of course the red squiggles of doom wouldn't appear.
Question of the Day
Do you have any dietary restrictions?
nothing based on allergy, though I'm supposed to limit salt and cut back on carbs (both of which I'm semi-crap at following)
It's Kitten Palooza!! I heard on the news that the Cat Adoption Team is hosting their annual Kitten Palooza this week. I asked Olivier, but he's not interested in adding a youngster to the household - I tried to convince him that it could be fun, but he wouldn't be swayed. I guess there could be up to 100 kittens looking for homes - per the pictures, they adorable (of course) and some have fun/inventive names.
An interesting glimpse at a man who history forgot. Or, Botany and Politics don't necessarily mix well.
The Forgotten French Scientist Who Courted Thomas Jefferson-and Got Pulled Into Scandal - Now a retired public librarian named Charlie Williams is trying to restore Michaux to the pantheon of great naturalists. In recent years, the 75-year-old Williams, who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, founded an André Michaux International Society, convened academic symposiums to encourage scholarship about his life and work, and even wrote a one-act play about the explorer, which he’s been known to perform in period dress. Last year, he and two biologist colleagues, Eliane Norman and Walter Kingsley Taylor, reached a milestone when they published André Michaux in North America-the first English translation of nine volumes of journals and letters that Michaux wrote during his American sojourn between 1785 and 1796. The immense 608-page volume, two decades in the making, resurrects Michaux’s epic wanderlust.
Heartwarming
adoption stories about adorable animals
Because it really is all about me ... It's always disappointing when I've enjoyed an author's works in particular fandom(s) and they suddenly fall into one in which I've little/no interest. Seeing them prolifically posting fic that just doesn't appeal always bugs me - why aren't they still writing stuff I want to read? /whine
Always check your receipts, guys! Pints of Baskin & Robbins ice cream were on sale for $2 (instead of almost $5) so I bought a couple. It was several days before I skimmed the receipt prior to shredding it, and somehow noted that I'd been billed just under $10. When I checked, the sale was still on; happily CS refunded the difference. I'd much rather pay $4 than $9.98!
