life’s a ride. you’ve gotta buy a ticket, hang on tight and keep going around ’til they kick ya off

I can't remember what I was looking for, but I was skimming last year's posts from the end of February when I bumped into dad's hospitalization - and then had to read the next few entries. It's hard to believe it's been a year since he died. Even though as an adult I didn't see him as often as I should have, he was such a big part of my life, and I'm frequently ambushed by random memories. Mostly good, which is nice. At that time I had every intention of going down to see mom more often, but then covid hit, so that's not been feasible, though I do try to call every few days - unfortunately most of those (usually lengthy) calls consist of me listening to her tell me yet again about random crap I didn't care about the first time, while I play solitaire on my laptop.

The white leopard tortoise was unknown to me, but they have really cool shells!

When I assembled my post for the 28th, somehow I missed the very last of my 'Stuff I Love' list. But since rules are for other people, I figured I'd include it here, though we're now out of February.

February is for Stuff I Love
hockey

my path to becoming a hockey fan was backwards - in 2011
james recommended a hockey RPF story, a werewolf AU. I didn't have any clue about the sport, that team, or the players, but didn't have anything else of interest to read, so gave it a shot, and kinda enjoyed it. months later I got an urge to reread it, tracked it down and after finishing began to explore more by the author, and then other stuff under the tag. because I always need to know, I began watching a few games, and to google stuff and when I stumbled across hockey blogs and podcasts, added them to the mix. soon I was compulsively reading quite a bit of hockey fic (ok, all of it) and discovering some damn good authors writing in the genre. initially I focused mostly on the Blackhawks, the Penguins and the Capitals in both fic and RL, but over time narrowed my focus to the Caps on-ice, and the Caps & Pens in fic.

I began rec'ing hockey fic in April 2012, and for a few years was doing so like it was my job. in fact, I guess people were telling others about those recs, which was odd (but gratifying) - I can't claim to be the sole reason 2012 saw an explosion in the fandom, but I may have contributed. my last batch of recs was posted July 2019; by that point I'd mostly stopped haunting the tag, as I wasn't finding much I cared about. either pairings or summaries just didn't appeal, and most of the really great authors had moved on. but I'm still invested in the Capitals, and still pay some attention to the Penguins.

I've been tossing food from the fridge/freezer gradually - couldn't really heave the weight of everything into the dumpster at one time. So the shelves are getting emptier, but I'd forgotten about the mayo in the door. Thankfully I remembered not to use it for my tuna today, and dumped it before grabbing a new jar from the cupboard.

Question of the Day
If you could choose freely, in which company or organization would you most like to work?
I can't say that any particular company immediately springs to mind - preferably one that behaves ethically towards employees and customers/clients. it would be cool if I could work somewhere that benefits folks - maybe one of the charitable orgs I've supported for years, like MSF or Heifer - not that I have a clue what they're like to work with, but I do admire their missions.

Fun cat memes - I loved # 2

Even back in the 80s, there was consensus in the community that Portland had a very large lesbian population - interesting to have some firm data to back that up. Portland Has the Second-Highest Percentage of Same-Sex Households in the Country- Portland has long prided itself on being a queer-friendly city. Now, there's new numbers backing that self-image.

According to a recent brief about the 2019 American Community Survey conducted as part of the U.S. census, Portland has the second-highest percentage of same-sex households of any metropolitan area in the nation, behind only San Francisco.

Olivier was about due for his monthly flea stuff, so I'd prepared it in advance, so I could dose him the next time I could catch him off guard. Earlier he came up and was sitting and purring by me while I petted him, which gave me a perfect opportunity. I grabbed him and squirted the stuff on his nape before he could really even struggle or put up a fight. The minute I was done he dashed off, and judging from the look he gave me, there's some serious doubt as to whether he'll forgive me by bedtime.

Teen Wolf fic recs:
Snakebites and Stardust: The Birth of a Genius Loci by
rei_c
Summary: "I'm going to go," Stiles says, "and you aren't going to stop me because you want me gone as much as I want to leave."

The sheriff flinches but doesn't argue, simply steps to the side and asks, "You have a plan?"

"Ten," Stiles says. "I'll let you know in August if I'm coming back."

or,

After the nogitsune, Stiles leaves Beacon Hills to figure out who and what he is. It takes a long time to find answers.

Stiles gets a new beginning - a really, really new beginning. several great OCs and a pretty different supernatural AU

and there's a companion piece by a different author, focused on Derek after Stiles leaves

Longing and Lightning: The Mate of a Genius Loci by
tiniestawoo
Summary: It’s Peter who folds, on Christmas day, staring at the television. “We need to go find Cora. She might be able to help us find him.”

him.

Derek can hardly say his name these days. Can hardly bring himself to acknowledge the integral piece of him that’s still missing, still far away. It’s worse now that he’s an alpha again. His wolf howls for his mate when the moon is at its peak. It howls long and low and lonely, but there is no reply.

There is just a pull, to the south and east.

Stiles leaves. Derek searches.

this isn't a sequel, but looks at the events in Snakebites and Stardust from a Hale perspective
