I remember when I was a kid watching the revolutions all across eastern Europe in 1989, as well as the demonstrations in Beijing's Tiananmen Square later that year. Back then it was phone and fax lines connecting the various dissident groups and often keeping them one step ahead of the authorities. Today, in Tunisia and elsewhere, it's cell phones and social networking sites and digital cameras. But the principle remains the same: technology can be a tool for liberation and autocratic governments had better always be aware of that fact.
It's events such as the ones in Tunisia that keeps me, at heart, an optimist when it comes to technology, in spite of all the challenges and frustrations it can cause. There will always be bumps in the road, but our technology, combined with the unquenchable thirst for freedom in the human hearts that make use of that technology, is our key to liberating and rebuilding the world.
