Last Resort

Today comes news of a possible diplomatic breakthrough in Syria, as the Russians have made a proposal to have Syria's chemical weapons placed under international control. Let's hope this proposal works out so that a military strike can be averted. However, I find it irritating that it is only now, after numerous officials have been beating the war drums, that we are just now hearing about such an obvious solution. The fact that this obvious solution seems agreeable to the Syrians makes me wonder if all other solutions were attempted before considering a military response. Military force should only be an absolute last resort, period.

Would it not have made more sense to have been working in partnership with Russia on such a proposal rather than have the appearance of the Russians stepping in to help save the day? Certainly it would have been a lot better for our apparently rocky relationship with Russia.

I find myself feeling somewhere between pissed off and extremely disappointed. I expected a lot better from this supposedly progressive, Nobel Peace Prize-winning President. The fact that he asked for Congressional approval for military action, but was quoted yesterday as saying that he "hasn't decided" if he'll abide by Congress's wishes isn't improving my mood.

I've heard several conservative pundits asking whatever happened to the anti-war left, which was so visible during Bush's military adventures but has been conspicuously silent and slow to organize regarding Syria. Although I hate to find myself agreeing with conservative pundits, it's a fair question in this case.
