No matter who the president is, the first casualty of war is truth and in any mad dash to military confrontation, there is the inevitability that there are things the public is not being told. Syria seems to be no exception. From leaked diplomatic correspondence obtained by The Christian Science Monitor, we now learn that Iran has repeatedly communicated
concerns about chemical weapons in the hands of the Syrian rebels to the United States.
When President Obama made his ill-advised remarks about chemical weapons use being a "red line" for the United States, the rebels had their opening to give their hawkish supporters in the United States (like Senator John McCain) all the ammunition they needed to push the US into the conflict.
Keep writing and calling your senators and representatives. Make sure that Congress understands that the American people do not want to be drawn into yet another war in the Middle East. Let's hope that the Congress displays the same common sense that British Parliament did when they voted no on interfering in Syria.
I have no doubt that there are powerful interests in the United States who have their reasons for wanting to get involved in Syria. I also have no doubt that their reasons for wanting that involvement will have nothing to do with the best interests of the American people.
