All the Great Discoveries Are Accidental . . .

After finding the Higgs boson, the Large Hadron Collider continues to surprise and delight. For its latest trick, it has apparently created a new form of matter. Which is fascinating and all. But to quote from the Livescience article, "Scientists didn't expect this kind of matter would result from the type of particle collisions going on at the Large Hadron Collider at the time." OK. Good to know.

Um. Remember when scientists told us when they turned this thing on that they didn't "expect" the Earth to be swallowed by a black hole?

So just to be completely safe, maybe its best if we don't play with the atom smasher on December 21. Just in case.

Next on Science Friday: Scientists to announce that in addition to the gluon and the boson, along with the protons and elections that we're all familiar with, the LHC has revealed the fundamental particle of toast. It is to be named the crouton.
