They were her glittery pens, and everyone in the class knew not to try to take them unless she offered. Her favorite had been Electric Lime because pink for girls was so expected and Tyra Collette liked to be noticed. Unfortunately, she was noticed, by the blondest kid in the room aside from her.

Little Tim Riggins had that stupid smirk on his face when he tugged her long ponytail and took a seat at her art table. Then he deliberately made a show of taking the pen and scribbling on a piece of construction paper with it. She narrowed her eyes at him in warning, but he just kept on grinning, pushing the hair from his skater-boy cut out of his face. That was the moment she hated and liked him all at once. She'd hit him upside the head, grabbed her materials and moved to the other side of the room, from where she watched him until the teacher brought them back to their classes.

Later that week, she was crying in a corner during recess where no one could see her. Her daddy had left to find work, and she couldn't help but cry when she thought about it. The case of pens sat at her side, ignored while she held her face in her tiny hands. She looked up when she heard footsteps stomp up and stop abruptly, and Tim stood before her, falling out of a big grin to a confused look.

"You're crying," he'd said. She just scowled at him, and denied it, but he sat down next to her and put his arm around her shoulders. He sat with her and told her whatever it was, it would be okay. He told her he'd protect her, and then he kissed her because he thought it would make her stop.

She didn't, but she laid her head on his shoulder, and he hugged her closer, brushing his hair out of his face.
