Neville spotted Charlie leaning against a doorframe talking to some Ministry worker he didn't recognize. The man was tall, polished, and laughed at something Charlie said with just a touch too much enthusiasm. Neville bristled and turned away, but Charlie's voice stopped him.
"Neville! Wait."
Neville froze mid-step, cursing under his breath. He turned slowly, forcing his expression into something neutral. "Yeah?"
Charlie excused himself from the Ministry worker with a polite nod and strode over. His easy smile dimmed when he got close enough to catch Neville's wary expression.
"You've been avoiding me," Charlie said, crossing his arms, his tone gentle but probing. "What's going on?"
Neville shook his head. "Nothing's going on."
Charlie smirked. "I'm sure you're tired of trying to patch things between Malfoy and Harry, but that's not it, though, is it?"
Neville stiffened, heat rising to his face. "It's nothing. Don't make this into a thing."
Charlie tilted his head, studying him. "Neville, earlier tonight, we were fine. Now you're acting like I've got dragon scales growing out of my head, and I'm about to give them to you as a Christmas present."
"We weren't exactly fine. You've been teasing me all night. First, you were flirting heavily with Harry, and I was nervous you two were going to shag. I'll have to handle Malfoy on my own, and then you're flirting with everyone else here. Not that it's my business. Like I said, I'm not interested in Weasleys. But… why… Why are you talking to me?"
"I never intended to be Harry's romantic date tonight. I only tagged along because he asked me to. And I'm a friendly guy. He told me that if he goes anywhere by himself, people are always throwing themselves at him, and not in a good way, so I thought, if I can help with that a bit… then I saw you with my brother, and I was curious, and…"
"You're confusing is all."
"You know, if I'm confusing you, I'd rather talk about it than have you running off."
Neville's heart thudded painfully in his chest. "I'm not… running off. I just-"
Charlie's expression softened further, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I'm not trying to confuse you, Neville." He hesitated, then added, "But I wouldn't mind spending more time with you. If you want."
"No, that's not what I want," he said watching Charlie's expression change.
