I've been doing lots of children's books. I LOVE Christopher Paul Curtis every time I start one of his books I think "this isn't me. Why should I care about _____" but after I finished I'm always left going "Wow!" He is one of the best children's authors on the planet. The Watsons Go to Birmingham -- 1963 is incredible! Elijah of Buxton is much too slow at first, but the end is amazing. I had several problems with the beginning of Elijah that's why it got only 3 stars. But the ending was certainly 4 if not 5 star worthy.
The Blue Castle is just charming. This would make a fun film if one ever gets made. I had some style problems with the sincerity of the romance versus the extreme farce of the relatives. It doesn't quite fit right. But that doesn't detract much from the whole.
Kira-Kira is a difficult book, but Out of the Dust is just brutal!
