Tony awards

I was thrilled that Seattle's Intiman Theatre won the regional theater award. In general I'm excited that Seattle is becoming more prominent in the national theater scene. However it's not always beneficial. The 5th Avenue had huge success with "Hairspray" but it doesn't look like "The Wedding Singer" is of the same caliber. Of course I could be prejudice, but I don't think I'd care to see either "Hairspray" or "The Wedding Singer." But Intiman did the original production of "The Light in the Piazza" so they get points there.

Other observations:

- Well I'm sure it's been said before but now I know if I want to produce a Tony winning show, I should hire Hal Prince to direct, a "Harry Potter" actor to star and put "Boys" in the title.

- On a related topic: I spotted 4 "Harry" actors: Ralph Fiennes, Frances de la Tour, Richard Griffiths and Jim Dale (the guy who read the books on tape/CD - also prominent from my childhood as the villain on "Pete's Dragon") Anyone I missed?

- The guy they showed during the close up was clearly not ALW.

- "The Threepenny Opera" clearly went too far. Come on, theater productions based solely on shock value don't work. I heard that the guy who did the translation only had a "working knowledge" of German, and at times he just added whatever he felt like adding.

- I loved the image of Sweeney climbing out of the coffin - GREAT!

- I had a moment of joy when they advertised that the award for Best Actress in a Musical was coming up and then Glen Close appeared and I was secreting hoping Patti would win for irony's sake. But no, Glen was presenting the Best Actor award. "No wonder Merly Streep calls her Glen Close but no cigar."

- I loved the "Jersey Boys" performance, and I totally didn't expect to like it. That is just not my era. But now I've had that song stuck in my head for 3 days.
