My college is going through a transitionary process currently. A transition in the wrong direction, away from hands on, direct learning, to theory based learning. In Media, especially television, this will not work.
The current Dean of the Mass Comm college believes theory is the way to go, and has started eliminating all programs AND professors he finds to not fit that mold.
As you can well know, a program that has been the way it has for 40 years, and is the reason it is the way it is because of it's "hands on" approach, will not change easily. The University, the community, the alumni and the students will not have it. Because of this, the Dean has chosen the route of termination.
I was contacted by the Alums today wanting to know if they had my support, and if I would be interested in starting a student movement against this change to a theory based program. I have accepted.
The Dean of Mass Comm has no idea what he is about to be hit with. I'm off to make war plans.
