So I finally had time to actually hook up my instant messaging program to google talk. For those of you that hadn't heard, google has an IM program in beta. It runs off of Jabber (an open source IM server/protocol), but does not have the connectivity to other networks that regular jabber has set up. There is a windows only client, very bare bones, that you can download from talk.google.com or you can simply add it to your current messaging program if it supports multiple systems. Select Jabber, use your full gmail address (i.e. blah@gmail.com) for the account name and the address for the server is talk.google.com.
I must say I really like the idea of my im being hooked into my gmail account, the whole one account idea. Of course, I hated it when hotmail did it, but with google it is ok. Isn't that always the way, from MS it is seen as evil, from google a godsend? I guess it all goes back to the title of this post, which is also google's motto. Makes me trust them a little more than MS. That, and the simplicity of google's interface makes me happier to use any of their systems. Whatever I guess, but either way you should check it out.
