Panorama Image (Not the image used in tutorial, but example of panorama):

I don't use GIMP normally, so I hope this is helpful. I'm a visual learner, so I made a quick video. It's best viewed full screen. Also, I've never done this before, I hope it's clear.

1) Open your image.
2) Select your crop tool.
3) Make a rectangle anywhere on the image.
4) In the crop dialog box, change size to 500 x 100.
5) Select Fixed: Aspect Ratio.
6) Resize your crop area to include everything you want to be in your panorama. Notice that while your width changes, your height remains relatively small. Once you have everything, crop your image.
--You can either color your image now, or after you size it to 500px x 100px.--
7) Go to Image, then Scale Image. In the width box, type in 500. When you type in 500, your height should change to 100. Hit the Scale button.
8) Go to View, then Show Grid and Snap to Grid. Then go to Image, then Configure Grid. Under Spacing, type in 100 for Width and 100 for Height. (You may want to change the color of your grid to see it better.)
9) Select your crop tool again. Deselect Fixed: Aspect Ratio. Crop your first image in the panorama, crop, save in your preferred method, then undo (Edit, then Undo or Ctrl+Z). Repeat this for your next four images.
