On rolls the season poll saga to Bill H's last full year as the Doctor - featuring monster epic The Dalek Master Plan, controversial musical interludes, THE MONOIDS, and much more

Doing these has made me realise how the planning and marketing we associate with the new regime was there from the start - OK hard for us to think NOW of "Doctor fights on 20th Century Earth" as a great season finale but The War Machines was very different from the 'usual' Who story at that point.
It was the first story (entirely) set on contemporary Earth. It took 3 years ! Imagine that... actually, no I can't anymore.
I have been rewatching a lot of 1st Doctor thanks to these polls, and the thing I love most about this era is how ambitious it all is. The program would never try as hard again to make each story so different from the last one (it almost goes without saying that I include the new series in that).
The 2nd Doctor was a daring new way to play the character, but I think it is during his era that the stories themselves settle down into much more of an idea of what is Doctor Who and what isn't, (with a few notable exceptions eg. the wonderful Mind Robber)
WOTAN is the second best companion that never was!
I have actually read a rub PAST DOCTOR ADVENTURE book, Doctor 5 I think, which returned to the Celestial Toymaker which started off really good ie by making references to Adric's body odour all the time, and then flashbacks to REBELLIOUS DOCTOR at Gallifrey Junior High, but then got bogged down in all the crap that I'm sure made Celestial Toymaker bad anyway. NB when I say "seen", I'm counting the bit of the episode that's in the Hartnell years where companions play stepping stones and some extra is Bill's STUNT HANDS playing what appears to be TriOminos.
viz also Doctor in a nightclub with SAUCY SAILORS telling him he "needs a bit of cheering up"! Marv. I hope they reference that episode w. Captain Jack in Torchwood.
I find it striking how many people are responding to these quizzes with firm views about whether a particular series is any good, but admit to not having watched/listened to/read the book of it!
