To say he was tired, was an understatement. He was exhausted. Not having slept at all last night, Charlie was both excited and dreading this day. Who would have thought that he, Charlie, was actually dreading this day. Then again, how many 13 year olds are thinking about their first day in college.
Princeton had offered a full scholarship to Charlie and his parents did everything that they could think of to ensure Charlie had the opportunity to attend such a prestigious university. Alan and Margaret decided that she would go to New Jersey with Charlie.
Now, it had been three weeks since they moved into their new apartment. At first Charlie loved the idea of going to Princeton. He helped his mom get the place just right. But now, all he wanted to do was go back home. He missed his dad and his brother, Don.
In a dead voice, Charlie said, “Mom, I wanna go home”.
“Why sweetie”, Margaret said softly. She knew what Charlie was thinking. She just wanted to hear him say it.
“I miss dad”, Charlie said.
“Just your father?”, Margaret replied.
“Well...can't I change my mind and go to Stanford instead?”
Margaret know Charlie missed Don as well.
It had been a very hard summer for all of them. Alan and Margaret were thrilled that Don was going to Stanford on a baseball scholarship. It wasn't long after Don received his letter that the snide comments from Charlie started.
“Stanford must be desperate if they're giving you a scholarship. Your grades were terrible. Why would anyone want to go there”. The arguing between the two of them was too much.
“As I recall, Charlie, you said and I quote 'I wouldn't want to go any where that took Don'. So why the change of heart now. You didn't even apply to Stanford.” Margaret said with a grin on her face.
Charlie's head bent down, sighing, thinking of what to say next; only he couldn't. After a little more thought, he looked up and said “I was tired of Don saying how great Stanford was going to be. He didn't even say congratulations to me on getting into Princeton. That's why I said what I did."
"I miss him", Charlie said in a quite voice, looking absolutely miserable.
“Actually, he did Sweetie, you were just too excited to hear him. Besides, I think it will be much better in the long run with you here and Don at Stanford.” Margaret said as she turned toward the kitchen. “Come on, let's eat some breakfast before your first class.”
A/N: I picked Stanford because they have an excellent reputation with their baseball program. Quite a few major leaguers have come out of Stanford. Also, I figured Don had to have had fairly decent grades (above average) as well as talent to get the scholarship. So put away the pitch forks.
