Pay up, bitchez.

So the Roman Catholic Church has to pay over $600 million to victims of priestly sexual abuse from the LA Archdiocese. It serves them right, they've been covering abuse up for years, moving offenders from parish to parish. And by years I mean at least a thousand. This particular case's outcome means that the has paid over $2 billion in settlements. It hasn't bankrupted them, though. Half of the money in the LA settlement will come from insurance companies.

All of this reminds me of the documentary "Deliver us from Evil". It's a truly great film. If you haven't seen it, it's about the case of Father Oliver O'Grady, who molested hundreds of children in rather remote parts of Southern California. His superior, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who was also the head of the LA Archdiocese during the current trial's purview, shuffled him from parish to parish, getting him out of police custody and lying to parishioners. O'Grady was finally put in prison, and deported after he was released. Amy Berg, the director, was able to interview him in Ireland over the course of eight days, where he spoke his mind about his pedophilia. She also tells the story of three different people molested by O'Grady, and their effort to get the church to acknowledge what happened.
I'm not anti-Catholic, but this documentary brings me pretty close. It even mentions the current cracker jack pope. Not in an appealing light, I assure you. I'd recommend "Deliver us from Evil" to anyone, unless you're particularly sensitive to graphic descriptions of sexual abuse.
