I don't know how long his lower leg is, but that should be about half of it. And having half of your lower leg cut that wide open calls for many many stitches...
My lower leg is about 12"; I'm 5'2". I assume this guy is a foot taller than me, so proportionally his whole leg should be 4-5" longer than mine ... yeah, that sounds about right.
Jesus. The article doesn't say which part of the lower leg was involved, or how deep it went, but I'm assuming the side of the calf, and this operation will involve muscle repair.
I think studs are available in 1/2inch and 3/4inch. (Feel free to correct me!) So that's the deepest the cut can possibly go by "direct touching", however, involving pressure and speed the skin/flesh might rip deeper. If it's a muscle that just was tense, there might be a deeper/longer tear, too. Judging him needing an ambulance and being in general anaesthesia during the operation I guess it was a bit deeper than just 1/4 inch, so more than a scratch. When a cut is 2cm(4/5") broad and was caused by something like a football stud, we also have to wonder if the full stud went in and broke the skin open and how much force was there. Depending on speed/pressure this CAN get rather deep. *RANTS* But besides that, let's hope he's okay soon. That sounds very painful and nasty :C
