Short theory. Because I have to be asleep in an hour ago. (sic)
In medieval times, the world was controlled by the clergy. The clergy controlled the people's knowledge of God and the afterlife and such, and were thus capable of getting away with just about anything, short of excessive public sodomy. However, with the invention of the Gutenberg press, the Bible was made available to just about everybody. The Church's power slowly began to cave in, as the power of information began to disseminate. Atheism became chic.
My theory is this- at some point, there will be a device that converts hydrogen ions and electricity into the various other kinds of matter. Thus, the creation of any material in existence would become relatively cheap and efficient. And, humans being as they are, the first use will likely be the creation of money.
If gold were to become this abundant, global notions of wealth would disintegrate. Everyone could have gold. They could have more gold than water. Those rich folk that currently control most of the world would lose their power, and from there, the idea of employment based on compensation would gradually phase itself out. You don't need money- if you want anything, you can have it made. The planet would eventually become based solely on altruism instead of materialism, if only out of need to get things done anyway. Famine would die out. Greed would become nonexistent.
This is my utopia, and I share it.
