Mormon Resignation Update

Jan 14, 2009 01:44

About a month ago I finally mailed in a formal letter resigning my membership in the Mormon church.

A week ago, I received a reply back from the central Member Records division, claiming that they couldn't handle my request, and that they would forward it to the bishop of the local ward that they believe I belong to. Yesterday morning, I sent a ( Read more... )

Ok, I'm really confused about Mormon as a religion. If I didn't want to be catholic anymore, I'd just stop praying etc.

The Mormon religion really confuses me. I think I'll pop to wikipedia for some help. That, and my brain is tired. It's freakin' freezing here :D

At least in Europe, yu can also officially "resign" from being catholic (if you ever were baptised).

All Mormon children are baptized and confirmed at the age of 8 years old. So they've had me listed as an official member since that time.

And catholic almost at birth... the numbers of church members are highly inflated due to this, many people are baptised never to step into a church again, others just after communion. In many places of Europe these are just social ceremonies that have become devoid of meaning, but still the church will count all this people as members.

I have also considered resigning, but the thing is that I never looked much into it. I don't even know in what church I was baptised, I should ask my parents.

So had they still been trying to coerce you back into the fold or had they already given up?

I've been getting monthly letters for years. And voicemails. And visits on my doorstep.

I certainly think so. But, because I'm listed as a member, they technically have the right to contact me.

I do have the legally protected right to resign, they're just being difficult and fussy about letting me go. But they'll have to do it.

I'm quite fond of the exmormon.org website.

This article on Mormon Women and Prozac very clearly sums up what it's like to be a woman in the mormon religion. I re-read this at least once a year, and every damn time it blows my mind.

I'm glad the process is moving forward for you. I had no idea you had to resign from being Mormon.

You don't have to, really. As I said above in another comment reply, I haven't considered myself part of this religion for over a decade. But, it's important to me to have my name formally removed, especially after the whole Prop 8 involvement.

That Mormon No More site is excellent. Clear, precise, to the point, and looks to be very helpful.

Mormonism is so strange from the outside. I mean, likely from the inside, too, but definitely from the outside.
