Summary: Janet's found herself in a family way.
Victor encountered a very odd sight when he entered the living room-his wife was crocheting a blanket.
And not just any blanket; it was a baby blanket.
"Um, Janet? Do we know any babies?" he asked tentatively.
"Give it nine months and we will."
He racked his brain. Who was pregnant? Who could it be? Surely not one of the Pride. Perhaps someone she went to school with.
"Some friend of yours?"
"Not exactly."
Okay. Broaden the mind-search. Maybe it was an old boyfriend.
"Ex?"
"No."
Aunt, uncle, cousin, sibling, or other family member. Had to be. He couldn’t see her making a blanket for anyone further out.
"Family?"
She paused. "Yes. We’re definitely family."
"Oh. Must be that cousin in Compton," he concluded.
"No."
"Really? Your aunt?"
"No."
"Are you ever going to tell me?"
Janet stuck the hook through the ball of yarn she was using.
"Actually, you noticed much sooner than I thought you would," she said.
"Oh?"
"I figured it would take somewhere in the vicinity of two months or so before you even noticed something odd."
Now he was confused. And more than a little nervous.
"The cat’s pregnant?" he stretched.
She glared at him. "No, stupid. The cat’s fixed. I’m pregnant."
He felt his knees give out a bit.
"Er, just a little pregnant, right?"
"Tell you what. I’ll kill you and you can tell me what it’s like to be just a little dead."
He sat down beside her. "Oh, my god."
She crossed her arms and looked away.
"What now?"
Janet winced a bit and chewed on her lip. "I went to the clinic and I couldn’t do it," she said.
Victor nodded. "I kinda figured you wouldn’t be able to. I wasn’t going to suggest it."
She choked down a quiet sob and leaned against him. "What are we going to tell the others?"
