039: News

He never expected to make the news when the Circle A got robbed. All he did was hit a guy. The cops showed up and did the hard work. At least, he decided, he hadn’t had to drag the guy’s unconscious body outside himself.

Geoffrey had been pulling a late shift, because the guy who was supposed to come in had called out. He didn’t mind. Extra hours meant extra pay. The bit that sucked was that he didn’t have as much time to spend with Catherine that day.

After the cops were done with him, and his relief showed up, he hopped into the car and went to her apartment, where he should have been hours before.

She met him at the door. Threw her arms around him. He caught her and chuckled at the sudden gesture.

“I was so worried!” she cried. “They’ve been playing the footage off of the security cameras for the past two hours!”

“They have?” he said dumbly. “Why?”

She gave him the oddest look then. “Because you hit the guy trying to tip over the Circle A.”

“Oh, right. That.”

He’d almost forgotten, having been too preoccupied with customers and cleaning to think about it. That guy had been carrying a gun. What if he’d been shot?

The thought made him shudder. Catherine’s words echoing his mind made him sweat a little.

“I need to sit down,” he said.

She let him in and walked him to the couch. Bustled around and fussed over him until she was sure he was comfortable, then sat down beside him and wrapped her arms around him.

“I love you,” she said, staring at the television.

“I love you, too,” he replied, staring at the wall behind the television.

“Be careful, okay?”

“Yeah, babe.”

Maybe Circle A hadn’t been the best choice, he thought. He hugged her tightly and tossed all thoughts of the night aside.
