So I'm not one to use my journal as a soap box, and I rarely use it to comment on politics but I have just a few words...

First, I don't like Bush, but then again I never was really enthused about Kerry BUT at least Kerry doesn't come across as a whiny little kid and actually at least LOOKS like a powerful man instead of a beady-eyed monkey.  and while I'm disappointed that Bush wins - especially since I really don't understand why people like him, although if you talk to this guy at my work who has a conspiracy for everything, he'll provide you with a study that shows that people with lower IQ's like Bush better - there's nothing that can be done about it now, I'll just have to keep turning off theTV when he's on because i just can't stand to listen to him talk.

so

what REALLY makes me mad, is that in the states that it was voted on there was a 3 to 1 vote in FAVOR of defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman in their state's constitution.  Even though I'm not homosexual, this really strikes a nerve because I really just don't get the opposing arguement.  Today a woman at work said, "well if we let gay people get married, what happens if I want to marry a cheetah?"  I about ripped my hair out, but instead decided it was better if I simply said nothing.  Something like that is so clearly ridiculous, it's not about the principle of marriage - it's about the rights it grants the people who are in the marriage.  Work benefits, executor's of wills...RIGHTS that heterosexual couples have FULL advantage of - But apparently NO ONE SEES THE DISCRIMINATION HERE!!!!!   I just don't see how people can't equate this with back when black people weren't allowed to get married, or even inter-racial marriage was illegal.  It not about the morality of the issue, it's about human rights.

I'm mostly frustrated because I just don't see enough progress being made and I have a feeling that I won't see the legalization of gay marriage in my lifetime.  When it does come however, it's likely to be a supreme court issue with controversy similar to Roe vs. Wade.  Since it's a human rights deal, this issue alone makes me want to become a lawyer.

I do take some solace however, in knowing that I can teach my children that all people, regardless or sex, race, age, or sexual preference should receive equal treatment.  And I know that that is definitely ideological, I feel our government should at least STRIVE to achieve it.

Any who...I really hope that Hillary Clinton will run in 2008, although I fear that the same people who are against gay marriage are also close-minded enough to not want a woman in the White House.

I really just don't understand - where are our progessive thinkers?!?
