(Season premiere slightly spoilery thing. Also, thanks
lipstickcat for being my loyal beta! <3)
Shawn knows that Gus knows that he knows.
Almost a life time of knowing your best friend gives you an automathical BFF Brain Scan in perfect sync, which instantly tells you what's going on inside your partner's sometimes naive and yet so very magical head or your best friends geniusly -in not a nerd way- and crowned with a great hair, head.
It's a shame that Gus got it all wrong. Shawn can tell by the little details. Little details that he can tell were left completely on purpose and oh, so very obviously completely under the wrong idea. There's no need for 'Breaking Up Protocol 101-Z'! No need to carelessly leave a bag of peanuts forgotten on the waiting room's couch. Or leaving the last melon popsickle abandoned in the office's freezer. Or the last issue of Maxine pathetically 'hidden' under a couple of bills on Gus' desk.
It's not that Shawn doesn't appreciate this stuff. It's about being wrong.
He wasn't even going through a real break up. Okay, he knows he's been a little fidgety lately, maybe even a little grumpy at the end of the day or when he surfed channels because there wasn't anything interesting on tv between a million and a hundred twenty eight channels to infinity. Maybe he's been checking his cell phone's inbox a little more than usual. Like twice every twenty minutes... Surely that fooled Gus. And they've been pretty busy lately with private cases and not getting much calls from the station. Not that he was looking forward to going to the station. Not that much. He already knows the building. ... It's not as if he actually wants to go and bug Lassiter. Maybe just to hang around him. Or talk. No. Not at all. Besides, he's been giving him the dirty looks, the ones that don't even look inviting to go and openly tease him because as much as he denies it he enjoys it too. Just the violence promising looks. And even Juliet, she's been acting a little weird around him lately. Not in a cold way, just distant. That's probably just his imagination. Sure Jules' hasn't reached the state of owning her own BFF Brain Scan yet. Or worse, copying her partner's behaviour.
Speaking of odd behaviours.
It didn't take long to reach the weird time for 'the talk'. That completely gave Gus away. In those rare occasions when Shawn had the pleasure to suffer it, it always started the same way: "You know Shawn, " Gus would say in his best Bill Cosby voice, "You're a young man. There's plenty of time to find the proper woman. Person.", he quickly corrected. .... Weird. "There's nothing wrong about keeping hitting on waitresses."
Gus actually believed that he was going through a break up.
Silly Gus.
It took almost five hours (with six snack breaks) to convince his best friend that he was okay. Maybe tired slash in need of spicing up his life. Considering that most of the Spice Girls were scattered around Europe, they both agreed that taking a vacation would work nicely for them both.
Someday he'll prove everybody wrong... HA! He doesn't need to proove anyone wrong.
And it's not.... It's not that he can't find the right person. It's just... He's still young. Very young. Antrophomorficly young. ....He thinks.
But maybe Gus is right about something. He's hasn't had a proper date in a while.
Well, not really by his own choice.

Calling Abigail wasn't a predictable move like Gus had teasingly implied. It had just occurred to him. Sort of, yeah. He hadn't heard anything from her in a nice bunch of weeks so, it was perfectly natural to ask her out to see her and see how she's doing.
Dinner, a movie, a late walk down the beach. Everything worked out pretty much perfectly.
And it felt natural. A slightly different to how most his dates had been working lately and it still felt natural. Refreshing.
He was walking her to her car when he felt Abigail's wrist brushing the back of his hand, softly, openly inviting him. They were quiet, but it wasn't an awkward silence. It was mostly an 'I've run out of things to say' in a good way silence. He had even gone through most of his Judd Nelson quotes compendium and things still felt okay.
He could go for this. She's beautiful, sweet, gets his humor, even the really random old movie and tv trivia jokes. Not to mention that he'd wanted this thirteen years ago. And who's he to deny that his old 17 year old self was quite bright? Enormously bright.
Different is good.
He stretched his fingers, searching for hers. He covered Abigail's hand and gently squeezed it.
He'd hurt her before and she's still giving him a chance. Something in the back of his mind keeps saying this is not someone you find everyday.
"You know." Shawn said softly. "I don't know if I'm right, if this is right. But I think I'm willing to be wrong."
Changes are good.
And right now, a change is what he needs.
