Shawn sinks in the truck's seat, his chin brushing his chest as he looks through the window, silent, because he likes to pretend he's not listening to his Dad anymore. His knees ache and so does the cut on his forehead. He's too tired to argue with his Dad and he knows he's not getting his skateboard any time soon anyway.
His pride hurts more than his bruises.
"What sort of job is a professional skate-boy anyway? More like a professional punk, if you ask me. Is that how you want to be remembered, Shawn? Do you want to be known as some little smartass, who threw his life away, ruining public property as some sort of sick fun, spending 23 hours per day drunk and being the living image of what mother's pray for their sons not to become?"
He can still hear Steve Fincher's laugh in his head. Shawn could have done it, he would have made that jump if that stupid Steve Fincher would have kept his mouth shut. That jump doesn't count. He was distracted. He knows he can make a better jump. It's only two trash cans. He can surely make that jump.
"You're going to be a cop, Shawn. You're going to be a respectable man and one day you're going to thank your old man for guiding you through the right path."
He's so going to do it. His Dad only grounded him for a couple of weekends. His Mom will probably be upset by how he torn the knees of his new jeans too, but she will surely forgive him and convince his Dad of giving him back his skateboard.
"You're going to be a great cop if you start putting some effort into it, kid. "
He's going to do it. And everybody will be impressed by just how cool he is, they might even carry him on their arms. Or maybe name a day after him. Or maybe some important actor will pass by as he makes his Phenomenal Mega-Mega Jump and offer him his own tv show!
"And I'll be proud of you, son."
And everybody is going to love him for it.
