i just got back from an awards ceremony at mathfest and i won a prize for my talk. yay! my professor is gonna be soooo giddy. madison wisconsin is a really nice place and they have a great school. ive seen a lot of interesting talks at mathfest while ive been here too. there is this 28 year old guy from mit (who got his phd at 20) who does A LOT of various work on the mathematics of puzzles, magic, art, origami, transformers, algorithms, computer science, an so on. his talks are amazing. after my talk, a guy spoke to me about sending him a copy of my talk, animations, and mathematica code because he does physics research in the same area. my professor found a soliton solution to the nonlinear schrodinger equation and my work was to verify it (it had yet to be done and we did). i guess him finding a soliton solution to that equation had yet to be done or something and it was a big deal to him. i gave him my professors contact info too because he loves to talks to others about anything but especially math. today was a good day.
