A/N: I’m not real crazy about this chapter. Sorry it’s so short. Also the story is going to be longer than I first though. Please read and comment. Comments make me want to write more.
Previous chapter:
1 Nick drummed his fingers impatiently on his thigh. He had managed, in Warrick’s words, to con the doctor into releasing him. Nick didn’t consider it conning though; he had simply pointed out that he would be in the hospital waiting for news on David so why go through all the hassle and paperwork of admitting him and yeah sure, he’d sign any forms they needed.
“Would you stop looking at me like that, Mother?”
“You’d better thank your lucky stars I’m not your mother.” Catherine huffed. “You’d be in a bed being pumped full of meds right now instead of playing tough guy.”
“I need to be here for David and as soon as they will let me, I have to see him.” Nick explained yet again. “And I don’t want to be all doped up when I do.”
“Don’t you think he’d want you to do what the doctor said?”
“Shouldn’t you be investigating the accident?”
“Grissom and Sara have it covered.”
“Great.” Nick closed his eyes, hoping it would ease his headache. This was all his fault, he shouldn’t have pulled over, shouldn’t have refused to go to Bobby’s, but most of all, he shouldn’t have told David it was over. Nick couldn’t forget the pained look on his face right before the crash. That couldn’t be the last look David ever gave him, it just couldn’t. God, what an ass he’d been! Sure, they had been fighting for most of the last three weeks but he knew he had said or done something to start the majority of the arguments. He’d behaved like a jerk but David never gave up, never walked away. Now, if he didn’t… if he didn’t make it… he’d never know how much Nick loved him.
“Where the hell is he?” a very pissed Bobby Dawson asked as he entered the waiting room.
“He’s in surgery.” Greg answered.
“Not David. Him!” Bobby moved in front of Nick. “What the hell did you do?”
“Bobby, calm down. It was an accident.” Catherine, like the other CSIs, was taken aback by the usually mild-mannered man’s anger.
Nick winced at the look of hatred Bobby was giving him. He couldn’t blame him, he had caused this and as a result Bobby might lose his closest friend.
“Why were you on the side of the road? Why wasn’t he wearing his seatbelt?” Bobby asked accusingly.
“We… uh, were arguing so I pulled over.”
“Arguing? Let me guess. You decided you didn’t want to come tonight.”
Nick merely nodded.
“And the seatbelt?”
“I think he was getting ready to get out.”
“Getting out? I guess he finally got tired of your bullshit.”
“Dawson, that’s enough!” Warrick glared.
Bobby glared right back. “What are you even doing here? You don’t give a shit if David lives or dies!”
Nick’s head was splitting and he was having a hard time following the conversation but he understood enough to know Bobby had turned his anger on Warrick and it looked like punches were about to be thrown.
“Stop it before you get us thrown out.” Nick sighed.
To Nick’s relief, they both backed down. Warrick took the seat beside him and Bobby stomped to the other side of the room and leaned against the wall. As a tense silence fell over the room, Nick shut his eyes again. He could hear David saying, “Man, why didn’t you let Bobby hit him?” Yeah, he would like that, of course, he’d expect Nick to intervene before Warrick could hurt Bobby.
Catherine’s phone rang, startling Nick out of his thoughts. It was obviously Grissom from what she was saying. When she finally hung up, every eye in the room was on her.
“Preliminary reports suggest the driver had a heart attack and lost control of his car. He died at the scene.”
Nick was about to comment on the fact that he hadn’t even checked on the driver when he saw the surgeon walking towards them.
“How is he?” Nick asked anxiously.
“He should be fine.” The doctor then proceeded to explain David's injuries, which Nick was only half listening to.
“I need to see him.” Nick stated.
“Are you a relative?”
“I’m his partner.” Nick ignored the loud snort that came from Bobby’s direction.
"It might be awhile before he wakes up."
“That’s fine. I just want to be with him.”
“The doctor nodded his head. “Follow me then.”
