“I knew you’d do this. I swear I don’t know why I even bothered asking.” David sat in the passenger seat of Nick’s truck.

Nick sighed. He didn’t want to argue, again. It seemed that’s all they did lately. “Look,  I’ve worked hard all day.”

“Oh and I suppose I haven’t?”

“I don’t want to go, Dave!”

“Yeah, I got that.” David stared out the window.

“You can still go.” Nick suggested.

“I can? You mean I have your permission? Wow. The great Nicholas Stokes has granted me permission. My life is complete now.” David hissed.

“I was just…”

"Fuck you! I don’t need your fucking permission to do a damn thing.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.” Nick was trying to be calm but he could feel the anger building.

“I don’t care how you fucking meant it. Just take me back to my car.”

Nick made a u-turn right there and headed back towards the lab. He knew they couldn’t keep going like this; the constant fighting was tearing them apart. He also knew David had every right to be mad; this was the third time he had backed out of their plans within as many weeks.

David was mumbling something to himself. It was a habit he had when he was angry and it drove Nick crazy.

“Shut up!” Nick ordered.

David glared at him and kept on mumbling.

Nick pulled the truck onto the side of the road. “Damn it, I said stop!”

“I don’t take orders from you!”

The sudden urge to beat the shit out of him overtook Nick and it was all he could do to hold back.

“Are you going to take me to my car or should I just get out and walk?” David unhooked his seatbelt as he was talking.

They sat there, glaring at each other until Nick finally broke the silence.

“I can’t do this anymore. It’s over, David.”

He barely had time to register the devastated look on David’s face before he heard a loud crash, breaking glass and screams then he felt his head hit something and everything went black.

Everything seemed fuzzy to Nick when he woke up. What was that damn noise and where was it coming from? He raised his head only to have a bout of dizziness overtake him. Waiting for the world to quit spinning, he closed his eyes and tried to remember what had happened. He’d hit his head, that much was obvious. Where was he? Oh yeah, his truck. He’d hit his head on the steering wheel and that annoying sound was his horn. Something was nagging at him, something important. The dizziness seemed to subside some so he opened his eyes and looked around. His front windshield had a gaping hole in it. Even in his current state his CSI training told him someone had went through that windshield. His brow furrowed as he tried to remember who was with him. It gradually all started coming back to him, the anger, the hurt look and the sounds, the horrible sounds of metal crunching and glass breaking. David! He had to find him. He tried to open the door but it was stuck so he gave it a hard shove, causing his head to start spinning again. He didn’t care, all he cared about was finding David so he kept shoving and on the fourth try the door flew open, sending him crashing to the ground. He grabbed hold of the door and pulled himself up, the need to find David driving him onward through the pain and dizziness.

“David!” he shouted as he stumbled his way to the front of the vehicle. “David, where are you?” He looked around frantically but there was no sign of him. He turned and studied the windshield trying to determine which direction he would have been thrown. He finally decided on straight ahead and a little to the left. He'd only gotten a few feet when he saw him.

Nick gasped as he kneeled down next to David. He was covered in glass and blood and for one terrifying second, Nick thought he was died. He put his fingers to his neck and felt for a pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief, it was weak but it was there.

“Hang on, Dave, I’m getting help.” Nick berated himself for not calling dispatch as soon as he regained consciousness. What if those precious minutes cost David his life? He couldn’t think like that. David was going to be fine. He had to be.

Nick heard the approaching sirens. “They’re almost here. You’re going to be alright.” He wanted to hold his hand or run his fingers through his hair, some kind of physical contact, but there was so much glass he was afraid he’d hurt David if he touched him. “I’m so sorry, baby. Please, please be okay.”

The ambulance and police cars came to a screeching halt behind the wreaked vehicle. It wasn’t long before Nick was being forcefully pulled away from David.

“God damn it, get off! I’m not leaving him!”

“No one’s asking you to, Nicky, but they need room to work.” Warrick continued moving him back.”

Before Nick could protest anymore, the ground started spinning again and he had to lean against his friend.

“We need a medic over here!” Warrick yelled as he lowered Nick to the ground.”

“No, no, I’m okay. Help David.” Nick batted at the medic’s hands.

“Sir, your friend is being helped. You have a pretty good gash on your head; I need to look at it.”

“Please don’t let him die.” Nick pleaded.

“Nicky, they’re doing everything they can.” Warrick assured him. “You got to have that bump on your head looked at.”

“I don’t care about myself…”

“Yeah, but David does. He’ll have my ass if anything happens to you so be quite and let the woman do her job.”

Nick finally stopped fighting it and let the medic examine him. Five minutes later, they were loaded into the ambulance and rushed to Desert Palms.
