Still catching up from the last week.
On Wednesday, I hosted a Geocaching event at Applegate Farms in
Montclair. A bunch of people showed up for ice cream and chatting. It
was nice to see everyone that made it. This was also to commemorate
Byebyemeat's (Avroair) completion of 40 days of Veganism. Meg and I
ordered "The Farm", New Jersey's largest sundae. 16 scoops of ice
cream, lots of toppings, and whipped cream. MMMMmmmmmm, we still have
lots in the freezer.
Thursday was a rush to get packed for the trip to GeoWoodstock. I
always pack way too much stuff. Did not sleep much since we had a 7am
flight. Flight left on time and was pretty short. MUCH better than
driving. We (Mark and I) arrived in Raleigh and after picking up our
rental car, we headed to South Carolina. Mark needed to fill in the
state on his Geocaching map.
We did 2 caches on the way to SC. First one was a nano (thanks
Marky). We found it. Thought about chucking it out on the interstate,
but decided on breakfast instead. DNFed one cache and found another
before arriving at the road side Mecca of South Of the Border.
Definitely an interesting place, but it seems to have gone downhill
somewhat in the more recent years. First and second cache there were
easy finds, but the third we also DNFed. Looked like the area was
recently cut with a very large machine.
Headed back toward the event hitting a few caches along the way.
Talked to a pair of cachers at one of the micros, but I forget their
names. When we got to the event, people were staring to arrive and I
saw lots of people I knew along with lots of new people. Did a lot of
coin trading before the poker event. Then it was time for the poker
tournament to start. This was my first time playing Texas hold'em
poker. I had not played any kind of poker since college, and even
then not much. So, I was a little worried that I was going to be out
very quickly. After making a bunch of mistakes and having a few lucky
hands, I was out in 11th place (out of 40). I was very pleased with
that.
After the poker, we headed back to the hotel and then out night
caching. We finally got back to the room around 4am (at that point I
had been up 24 hours). Had a fun time night caching and we did pretty
well, very few DNFs. Saturday morning we got up a little later, had
breakfast in the hotel and then headed to the event. More coin trading
and met Lots of people. Left the event to go get some lunch. I am not
sure why they did not have lunch (I would not have minded paying
extra). We ate at "Cookout"; it was a hamburger place that only had
outside seating. Not sure what happens when it rains, I guess you get
wet . Headed back to the event after lunch.
