Fledglings» Just as Yuu Kanda started to cope with his painful life in the Asian Branch's research facility, he and Alma receive unexpected visitors: the four young Crow trainees Link, Madarao, Tevak, and Tokusa. Alma is eager to make friends, and Yuu is pretty sure he hates them. Manipulated by authorities and placed in circumstances beyond their ( Read more... )

Oh, this was such a delight to read, all the way through. You lent a unique voice to each of the Crows, and though I began this story for Alma & Kanda, by the end I found them to be very enjoyable characters.

But god, there was one bit that especially caught my breath:

And she couldn't see, but she could sense the people all around her, talking and laughing. She'd had a bright day, a fine dinner and bubbling champagne-

How I love that you included that, as we never got to see Alma's side of remembering the woman he used to be. ♥ Now I really want to read what led to his eventual realization of it :)

I'm glad you found the Crow parts enjoyable as well. I like them a lot (though I wish we knew more about them), which is why I chose to write about them, along with Kanda and Alma.

Good question--I wonder how Alma's memories came back. Did he remember all at once after discovering the bodies, or did he have dreams and visions of his past life, like Kanda?

Thanks for reading and commenting. :)

I'm going to assume that it ALL came back to him when he found his "real body," because after that, well, he was indisposed for a while (ahem) :((
But yeah, I'm really interested in whether he had visions like Kanda beforehand (this will be my headcanon until proven otherwise!).

If only we had seen any of Alma's memories... I really want to know what Kanda looked like in his previous life.

That first part is what the manga seems to suggest. I think.

Hmm, now I want to see past!Kanda as well! Too bad there was no Ghost of Kanda I drifting around the lab thanks to Alma's memories. I can only picture a Japanese man who is older and more masculine than Kanda. (Although I think it would be great if Kanda was also a woman in his previous life. Admittedly, this is in part because I'd love to see the fandom reaction.)

Wow.

Just wow. This was an amazing look at these characters in their youth. As mentioned by tohers, your characterization is wonderful and very true to canon. Your description was lovely, and the prose very pleasant to read.

My heart broke ten times over for Alma and Yuu. That ending scene of Alma crying and Yuu crushing him in a hug in a dark, cold room brought tears to my eyes, literally. And the four Crows really came to life here (or rather the three we don't see as much of - Link has some good development to him). The whole story really felt like it was an extension of the manga canon.

This was truly a joy to read (well, heart breaking at the appropriate places, but I'm a sucker for angst when it's well done), and I'm so glad you shared it with us! Well done!

Thanks for reading, and I'm happy that you enjoyed it!

I have too much Crow headcanon. They're such minor characters, and the manga hasn't told us much. Or, well, anything. I finally got to use some of those ideas here.

Poor Alma can't catch a break, not that this is unusual for DGray characters. I love angst myself, though when writing I tend to write light or humorous things more often. It was fun to write something slightly darker, and I'm glad you enjoyed the angst too.

Hello!

We are fascinated. I know no more exact word, really.

Everyone in Fledglings is so in character, Alma is so sweet, kind and yet tragic, Crows are so childish and yet responsible, Fou is a real guardian spirit - I could almost hear her talking to Touyi Chan.

The mood is dark and great, and everything is just so... meaningful.
Some bits of fanservise are nice too. :)
Alma, had to mention him again, just shines. We love your headcanon.

So, would it be okay, if me and my friend translate Fledglings into Russian? We desperatly want to share this famfic with our fandom, and of course, we will include all the copyright stuff.
Would you mind if we do so?

Oh wow, thank you so much for reading, and I'm glad you enjoyed it that much! It was a challenge for me to write something this long, but comments like these make me happy I managed to finish.

Sadly, my headcanon no longer matches the hints of canon Crow backstory, but since I wrote it before that chapter, it can't be helped.

I wouldn't mind at all! I would love to see this translated into Russian. I'm honored that you asked. However, can you wait a few days? I'd like to edit it a little first, since I didn't have enough time before the deadline. I want to fix some of the prose, at least.

Do you have an email address I can send the edited version to?

Thanks so much for commenting and for asking to translate it. &hearts

Oh, non-matching headcanon is the thing that usually happens to those who read ongoing manga. >_<
Anyway, your interpretation of Crow's past is great and feels just like another version of canon.

Sure we can wait, thank you for permission! ^_^

Yes, that's too true. XD I'm glad it makes sense on its own.

Wonderful! I'll get back to you.
